Hi.
Like others on this board I have chronic hives. I'm going
on my 7th week. I am willing ot try anything at this point.
I've done all the blood work and seen my primary twice
and an allergist. Next week I'll visit a dermatologist.
I've done all the various meds.
I can see that a lot of folks here are strong admirers of
Stress Reductions techniques. But you see- I'm not stressed. This is one of the most restful, content times in my life (well- except for the hives). I'm not working by choice. There is very little pressure in my life.
I'm really rather good at getting in touch with myself so I doubt I'm in denial.
Bottom line : Why should I make an effort to reduce stress I don't have ? Got any other suggestions ?
Leslie

Leslie,
The kind of stress to which you are referring is emotional stress, and that makes up only a small percentage (less than 10%, I believe) of stressors to one's unique body chemistry.
Check the glossary, archives etc. on this board - hives and the resolution to them has been talked about numerous times. Good luck to you.....

i had those buggers for a year- SEVERE everyday! i was ready to slit my throat. i got rid of them after much much research. i have found the following-despite what the dumb docs will tell you- hives are always caused by1) some "poison " in the body this could be an allergen, heavy metal( like mercury or lead) , an infection( by far the most of the time a gut infection ie candida or parasite EVEN IF YOU HAVE NO INTESTINAL SYMPTOMS!God forbid, a tumor etc etc2)along with this your immune system/nervous system HYPER_REACTS to the poison( you could be calm as a cat, but just the fact that your system is putting out the hives shows that it is hyper-reacting.3) conventional doctors 90% of the time will fail you in finding the cause.but you should get the tests run anyway to rule out something serious. the cure- super relaxation of the nervous/immune system through s/r ( even if you dont find the poison you can get the hives to abate 2) find the poison- start with the gut i firmly believe most chroninc cases involve dirty intestines.

Thanks for the responses.
I did read the archives and have read some of the
articles. Actually I saw my gyno on friday and
I do have a yeast infection. So in addition to the meds
she gave me all check that out as well.
The idea that it's body stress and not
emotional stress is worth some thought.
But I believe the Dr is talking about emotional stress
that gets translated into body stress. This is
apparent from parts the table of contents of one of his books:
1. How You React To Stress
12. Biofeedback
2. Body Awareness
13. Thought Stopping
3. Breathing
14. Refuting Irrational Ideas
4. Progressive Relaxation Training
15. Coping Skills Training
16. Goal Setting and Time Management
17. Assertiveness Training
7. Applied Relaxation Training
18. Job Stress Management
8. Self-Hypnosis

Hi Leslie,
Stressors (of any kind)are going to affect the gut and cause problems such as LGS (Leaky Gut Syndrome). It is the LGS that causes one's system to become hypersensitive, thus "acting out" with hives, asthma, pick an autoimmune disorder, etc.
If you search on Skilled Relaxation (SR)in the archives etc, you will notice that biofeedback, progressive relaxation techniques (listed above) are mentioned.
Often times, it can be emotional stress that sends one's body "over the edge" and causes it to be symptomatic. However, on it's own, it is only a small % of the actual cause.
Your most helpful friend right now would be SR, using any technique that works for you.

Hi Leslie,
Are you sure its not an allergic reaction to something?
Have you ever had them before. One of my daughters will have an allergic reaction brought on by something (?) and then it sets her off with hives....it just runs a course for several weeks....there isusually nothing she can do but let it run its course. Although yours is going on week 7.

I'm on week 14 with my hives. They started out of nowhere, right after my finals were over and I was not stressed at all. I've been to about 4 doctors and I finally have an allergy test this week. I've been taking allegra every morning & night and that seems to be working. I only wake up with a couple. I am 21, and have never had them before, either. I'll let you know after my dr. appt...

I too had hives for about two months or less...could not figure out anything different in my diet..Everynight I would wake up with hives on my legs and my arms. One morning I had waked up and brushed my teeth and about 30 minutes later my mouth was swollen...went to the doctor he confirmed hives...He gave me a steroid shot and benedryl tablets... a day or so later.. the same thing...then I started thinking about brushing my teeth..I had bought a different toothpaste...Crest which had the peroxide and baking soda additives...I stopped using it immediately..and I have not had an episode of hives since. So, I am convinced in my case it was the toothpaste... Hope this might help...

Thanks, labrat.
Of course you are right.
Until Leslie learns what stress really is she will continue to think that psychosocial stress is the only kind.
Leslie, go to the homepage, glossary, search engine and archives until you understand the modern medical interpretation of stress.
THEN, if you still have questions, write again. KNOWLEDGE will set you free.

Thanks, mister itchy.
Of course you are right. However, still, the most basic thing that caused the LGS which caused the dysbiosis that allowed the parasites or toxicity to happen is the accumulation of stress-effect. See Selye.

I also break out with hives. One occasion I had was very bad. It turned out I had a sinus infection. The Dr. said the body tries to find ways of getting rid of these illness. Hives seems to be the way of the body ridding of some illness. BUT I also have allergies.
