"erosion of vaginal cells"

Posted by anonymous on August 06, 2001 at 00:57:27:

Dear Doctor,

I have seen several doctors about this and had pelvic exams over and over to find what causes urethral pressure and soreness in a few places in my vagina. One doctor said "there are some abraded areas" while she was down there checking me out and prescribed Premarin cream to heal and coax the estrogen into tissues for healing. But as I read about "erosion of vaginal cells" it all seems linked to Menopause--and I'm 27 years old. It is peculiar. I don't mind using the cream, for a short time anyway, although I'd prefer to be doing all-natural regimen. The SR sounds good, just in case. But I'm just wondering if you've ever treated anything like this. I have no hormonally "off" effects, my periods are perfectly regularly and with minimal cramping. I eat sensibly, etc. Can you help me with this? I even got a painful biopsy done and they cannot find any disease to cause these particular areas to be thin. I've never been pregnant or had an abortion. Thank you in advance for your help...

Hi, Anonymous.

Do you have painful intercourse? When the doc checked your estrogen level, what did she find?

Are you taking any medications/birth control pills?

Sometimes you can have normal estrogen levels but the estrogen is "blocked" from your vaginal cells for reason I am not sure. This in turn causes atrophic vaginitis or immature cells.

You don't have to use Premarin cream. Premarin is made with horse urine. You can get estradiol cream compounded at a compounding pharmacy OR use Estrace Cream instead.
Or there are the new Vagifem inserts that are made with estradiol (which matches the hormones our body makes) http://www.vagifem.com/

I have heard of too much soy products blocking the natural estrogen in younger women.

Have you had your thyroid checked?

Lynn,

I have been eating a lot of soy food! Daily, since this began! What have you heard about this? It blocks the natural estrogen produced in the body?

Thank you,
Anne

Yes, intercourse used to be 100% painful. Now it is about 30% painful.

Regarding the hormone levels, I'm a little confused. The doctor did not check my estrogen levels, because she said they are usually so fluctuating that a test is not accurate. Should I find another doctor? Can I test myself?
She wanted to put me on Orthocyclen (my periods are fine though) as a trial run, but I declined this.

I'm verrrry interested in this soy connection Lynn mentioned, as this is the only thing that has really changed in my life since beginning this painful "erosion." (I put it in quotes because I hate the word. It sounds so "permanent," and scary, but I believe I can reverse the condition!)

Sincerely
Anne

Also:

I'm not on any medications. For the last two years I've been mostly vegetarian, increasing my soy intake to obtain protein, lots of tempeh and also soy protein powder as a supplement. How curious.

Dr. did not check my thyroid. She seems pretty much baffled about the whole thing.

Can I obtain estradiol compounded cream without a prescription? It is human estrogen? Or plant?

Thanks again SO much--
Anne

Thanks, Anne.

I thought so.

This means that at least part of your problem is levator ani bracing.

The doc can take a smear directly from the area of abrasion and the lab can then tell your estrogen level from that IF she does not trust the lab with a blood test.

You will eventually find that this problem is caused by at least several interlocking causes. Elimination of one of them MAY resolve the problem but dealing with several will work better.

Let us know how you do.

Hi, Anon.

This is NOT a rare problem! The elimination of your pelvic bracing would reduce friction damage (which ANY physician would tell you is the "cause" of your "erosion").

OBVIOUSLY your doc also thinks this is a symptom of early menopause--else why the recommendation of the hormone cream?

The question you have to ask yourself is WHY would this be happening to you? Since the most common cause of hypothalamic hormonal changes is due to storage of stress-effect in the hypothalamus (Read Pelletier's and Selye's books and develop some understanding of your own.) Since the SR is the only thing known that can reverse THIS......
