Anyone here know of adverse problems with hair dyes? I have my hair highlighted at the salon about 4 times a year. Is there any danger in the chemicals in the dyes? Thanks for your help.

Hi, I used to dye my hair too.
Recently I read an article about women who have their hair dyed having higher rates of autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, etc.). If I had specifics (publication, name of article, etc.) I would pass them along to you; however, I probably read it on the internet (that's where most of my reading is done these days!). You might try a search or you might check out Dr. Mercola's website, www.mercola.com. -- perhaps that's where I saw it.
I hope this helps --
P.S. They do make 100% vegetable dyes you can use, which would be a lot safer; however, they wouldn't last as long.
Take care, JoanNAz

Hi Kimberly,
I also have my hair highlighted and have had no problems with the dye. My hairdresser uses the foil method and leaves about 1/16 or 1/8 of an inch above the scalp free from the dye. So very little of it comes in contact with my scalp. I have heard reports, but not for quite some time, about hair dye causing brain cancer. I'm not sure I believe that. My mother and grandmother both dyed their hair for many years with no problems. Hope this helps.

Hi - Like Joanie, I know many people who have had their hair dyed, me included. I also used to have the highlights and had my hair frosted (do they still call it that?) using both the foil and the cap methods. As Joanie says, even with the cap method, the dye is not used at the scalp, just close to it. Of course, they definitely advise against coloring the hair if you are pregnant, which I'm sure you know. But my stylist has had two children since I have been going to her, and she has worked through both pregnancies, using hair dye and being around all hair products; but she didn't use anything on her own hair while pregnant. Also, I see women who are at least in their eighties having their hair dyed each month!
I am practically repeating what others have said, but sometimes it helps to have many opinions. Raisa

Hi, Kimberly.
Personally, I would never use hair dyes. Those systems that say they protect the scalp from the dye do not explain how the hair gets dyed right to the scalp line. Frankly, they are just to get the person to THINK they are being protected.
The problem is that we are ALL exposed to at least 500,000 chemicals every day in our "modern" culture. It is the accumulation of these that are now overwhelming those of us who are at the bottom of the bell curve of resistance. Hair dyes are just chemicals that we can easily avoid just by deciding. Would that we could as easily avoid others.
Those of us lucky enough to be at the top end of the bell curve can use hair dyes with impunity. Wellness moves anyone up the graph. Anyone who wants to use dyes should either practice wellness OR hope that they will just be lucky.
The people I pity are those putting the dyes on since they are exposed every day. However even they are not so unlucky as people who work in dry cleaning establishments.

Hi, Mary - In my opinion, no because smoking has been proven to cause cancer and other diseases. I think it's like anything we use that is questionable, such as cell phones, microwaves, bubble bath, etc. There is no concrete proof, but there are some studies which have found these things unsafe. This, of course, is just my opinion. Raisa

Congratulations, Les.
Good luck. Maybe you will be lucky.
Once anyone understands the pioneering researcher, Hans Selye, MD's work (Now acknowledged as the world's foremost expert on the effects of stress on the bodymind.) they will begin to understand how stuff like the chronic exposure to hair dye can affect the entire bodymind.
Listen to Mary (Thanks, Mary!)

I have salt & pepper hair (at least I assume so, I haven't seen the real color in 15 years) and I just can't stop dying it. I thought that "they" changed the kind of dye they use and it doesn't cause brain cancer anymore. Is it really dangerous to dye one's hair? I have to dye it all the way to the roots.

Hi -
No one knows what could eventually happen. Almost anything we do to ourselves could later be found to be harmful or potentially harmful. I thought they had taken out the things in the dye which were said to be unsafe, too.
I realize it's better not to use dye, but I can't imagine not doing it. If they ever come out with a good product containing no chemicals, just like they improved food coloring so that it is now harmless, I will certainly switch to that. Raisa

Well Put Walt! Weeks after do you know that you can smell hair dye all the time on the head and hair and breathing it does not help one applying it either. After years of using it, i'm glad i went natural white and it has a blond tint to it and is quit pretty. Natural is best! My man smells the difference and likes it a lot better now.
