diastatic malt source?

Posted by woody on August 30, 2002 at 13:29:11:

I found what I think is a source for diastatic malt powder, but I wanted to run it by everyone first before I buy as I got burned on the King Arthur stuff too... It is from Bob's Red Mill, they call it malted barley flour, they descride it as follows: "Barley Flour-Malted, also known as Diastatic Malt" and when I e-mailed the company to ask if there was anything else in it other than diastatic malt the reply I got said it has nothing else in it and it is just plain "barley that has been sprouted, dried, and ground into flour". I e-mailed them back to ask at what temperature it was dried and what the enzyme content was but no response so far. So, for those of us who can't make their own, does this sound like the right stuff?

Hi Woody,

I can't answer your question, but I just wanted to say that I have found Bob's Red Mill products to be very high quality. I'm fortunate that they are available in all the health food stores and the natural food sections of the conventional grocery stores in my area. All the bags are stamped with a date, so you know what you are getting is fresh. All the products I have used are whole grain and stone ground. I hope the malted barley flour is what you are looking for.
