Caffeine withdrawal

Posted by Bob on October 09, 2002 at 02:46:53:

I went 3 years without drinking soda of any kind. Unfortunately, a couple of months ago I started drinking Coke and Pibb Extra again and am really mad at myself for doing so because it appears that I have developed a caffeine addiction. I went 2 days without soda and developed a nasty headache and felt absolutely terrible.
After awhile it occured to me that it might be a withdrawal symptom from caffeine. I then drank a couple of large cokes and the headache went away. Now what do I do? Is there a way to get off of this stuff without going through the severe headaches and awful feeling? It not, how long does it last? Should I just suffer through it and be done with it or is there a better way?

Headache is a classic sign of caffiene withdrawal. You can just taper off the caffiene to avoid it.

I went cold turkey on no caffiene a couple of years ago. The headaches went away after a few days.

OOOH Sugar, Sugar - headache is a classic sign of sugar withdrawal as well. I would bet it is more an addiction to sugar than caffeine. Try drinking black coffee first and get over the sugar addiction. Then taper off the coffee. You should cut the sugar out of your diet completely too. I'll bet soda is not your only bad habit.

Not so! As a black coffee drinker who avoids sugar, I can attest to the fact that caffeine withdrawal alone will result in horrible headaches. I don't know how long they last, as I am still addicted.

I suggest just quiting it all (sugar and caffeine) cold turkey and putting up with a headache for a couple of days. It is worth it in the long run. Cutting back is ok, but it really isn't a commitment.

Whenever I've made the same mistake as you (Las Vegas last year)and ended up addicted again, I've had good luck with mixing regular soda with caffeine-free soda and tapering the regular down every day until it was gone. No headaches that way! Then it's much easier to get off the soda completely.

Thanks, chris.

You are absolutely right. However the combination feeds each other and makes it much more difficult to get off either. See the sugar archives and the article on the home page.
