Hi Dr. Stoll, I'd like to know what sucralose is. I saw Dr. Atkins on TV last night and he said sucralose is an acceptable sweetener on his diet. Is this good for us, or what? I'm thinking of trying the whole foods diet for my leaky gut and can't imagine not having any sweets at all, since I've been craving sweets the last few months. HELP!!!!

The best thing is to forget the sweet taste forever.
Don't eat anything sweeter than a fruit. (and you are allowed to fruit only if you don't have a candida problem)
Stevia is almost the only acceptable sweetener, but you can't really put very much because you get an aggressive after taste. Also, I used it every day for a while in cranberry juice and I had to stop because I was having a reaction on my tongue.

Sweet cravings can often be the result of inadequate protein and and healthy fat consumption. It would be wise to make sure you getting enough of these very important nutrients.

Hi, Georgia.
What does sucralose come from? What is it's chemical structure?

What about Xylitol? It's currently made from birch tree bark. It is a sugar alcohol. It's being touted as healthy, especially for your teeth.

Dr. Stoll, Look on line at www.splenda.com. All the info is there. It is made from sugar but the body does not treat it like sugar or carbs. At least that's what the website says. Thanks always for your help.

Elaine Gotschall says Sucralose aka Splenda is a big No-No.

the Splenda website is PR for the product = bogus. Its a chemical.
I realize that agave nectar and stevia are not "wellness" sweeteners (since there aren't any on that diet!) However, agave nectar has a GI (glycemic index) of just 11, so its far better than sugar if you have to have a sweetener. Unfortunately, the price has way gone lately. Stevia actually helps stabilize blood sugar, so if nothing else, reduce the sugar and add stevia to help minimize usual GI affects.

Hi, What.
Read the sugar info on the home page and in the archives.
Anything that ends with ol or ose reacts the same with the Kreb's Cycle. This is only imporant if the individual wants to know how much refined carbohrydrates are affecting them or if they are trying to get rid of C-RS.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Georgia.
I spent about 15 minutes on the 'site and learned that less than 1/4 of the molecule would trigger the same response as sugar in the Kreb's Cycle.
That means that it still would trigger the cravings during withdrawal and so I would avoid it until at least the 6 months mark and then gently to see if cravings would recur.
Hope this helps.

It helped a lot and made me realize why I am still having cravings. Thanks!
