Not to be stupid about the subject, but why is caffeine so bad for you exactly? Or is it ok to drink? I only ask because I hear all of this stuff about cutting caffeine out of your diet. I cannot help but look at my grandmother. She has been drinking coffee ever since she was 12. She is 76 now and in perfect health. She drinks about 5-7 cups a day plus coke and tea. She still works every single day as a school teacher. She has never had any health problem except for a broken knee. Does the caffeine only affect some people or what? Thanks for any help you can give.

I really dont know but I wonder too. I think it boils down to some people just have strong immune systems than others. Ive read caffeine stresses the liver. I drink 1 cup a day with stevia. I drank it for a good 15 years with 3 heaping teasppoons of sugar, that is what had a bad affect on me (sugar).

Coffee and tea are plant products which have been utilized by humans for thousands of years. They have been put to the test of time, and are still in use, so they are probably useful, pleasurable and benign.

Green tea naturally contains caffeine. Today at the health food store, I asked about green tea without caffeine, and was told by their naturopath that its best to have the natural green tea without the caffeine being removed, as the methods used to remove caffeine are not very good, as they could be using chemicals to remove the caffeine etc.
So I am a little confused with which green tea to go with. And now I have about 3 boxes of green tea altogether. Organic Green Tea (not Caffeine Free)by Liptons, Sen Cha Green Tea(Caffeine free) Japanese Tea, and now China Green Tea (not caffeine free)

If used in moderation, I've read of more benefits then health risks concerning caffeine.

Brian, What benefits have you read about caffeine? I am wondering since I LOVE coffee. I love the decaf variety also, however, I heard that is worse.

The caffeine kick you get is from sugar stored in your liver - drink too much of it you can end up with low blood sugar. Some people can handle caffeine all their life without a problem, but throw some major stress in, and you can end up exacerbating anxiety symptoms. There is such a thing as caffeine toxicity, which can dangerously lower your potassium level, and can also damage your liver and muscles. I use to drink 10 cups a day, until I had an anxiety attack. It took 3 weeks of abstinence before my symptoms subsided. I drink coffee again, but in moderation, and as soon as I feel anxious, I slow down considerably. It's a balance thing. Someone with heart problems or mitral valve-prolapse is playing russian-roulette if their taking in high doses of caffeine. On the good side, new studies say that it can reduce the effects of a stroke taken along with alchohol.

Read Caffeine Blues by Steven Cherniske. that book has the best explanation of all the negative effects of caffeine. I stopped using it and drink herbal coffee called Teecino instead because I have a sleep disorder and depression and would to cut down of get rid of some of my meds.

Hi, Miss.
Mancha Green Tea (what is used in the tea ceremony in the orient) has about 200 times as much of the good stuff in it as the green tea presently being promoted in this country. Reference "Science News" within the past month. I agree with your Naturopath.

Hi, Hope.
Used in moderation, I do not see much problem with caffeine EXCEPT if you are trying to break a refined carbohydrate addiction and then the slightest tract will do you in until the addiction has been broken for at least 6 months. THEN, you are stil taking a chance but your bodymind will tell you--you will not need to have anyone else tell you.

Seems I can even purchase it here in Australia, Walt, if this is the one that you meant?

According to this article (if you arrow down) says that gyokuro tea is the highest quality green tea, even healthier than the "matcha green tea", and almost three times the cost of the "matcha green tea".
I have a friend at work who gave me some authentic green tea. The actual leaves from an asian friend of hers who had returned from the orient. My friend definitely notices a difference when she drinks the authentic green tea, a diff. in her health, energy, and mental clarity.

Thanks, Miss, for the correction!
I was trying to do it from memory.
The exact reference is the April 12th issue, Volume 163, page 238.

Thanks, Miss.
The study I reported did not test Gyokuro. It will be interesting to see the results when they do.

So just to clarify, Walt.
You mean the Green Tea WITH caffeine is the preferred beverage, right?

Hi, Blissy.
Just remember that the antioxidents in these green teas prevent aging things over at least 10-20 years. If one is trying to eliminate a refined carbohydrate addiction, and thereby have to eliminate caffeine till the addiction is controlled, we are talking about 6 months--not years.
Hope this helps.

Walt,
So you mean it would take this long 10-2o years of drinking green tea, to get the anti aging benefits? Well, at least I will be a young looking granny! lol

Miss,
Of course antioxidents work almost immediately, but we are aging every day. SO, to actually see the difference between matched people (one of which drank green tea every day and the other did not) it would take 10-20 years to see the difference with our unaided eyes. Of course, there are sophisticated tests and even microscopes :o) that could see the differences earlier than that.
Hope this helps.
