Craving sweets- not just sugar

Posted by suzy on October 06, 2003 at 12:59:37:

I keep reading about sugar addiction and cravings. I am hypoglycemic and I avoid white refined sugar 99% of the time. My problem is that when I eat anything that is sweetened with any sugar substitute or anything natural, I want more of it! And the sweeter it is, the more I want. I have read that people can have some kind of chemical deficiency that triggers this. Can anyone give me some insight into this? If I stay away from sweetened food, I'm fine, but I still crave the sweets regardless.

You don't have a deficiency. Your body. like everyone else's runs off of sugar. The problem is that your body can't tell the difference between refined sugar, and sugar it can "use." Refined sugar is devoid of the co-factors and support compounds that are essential to digesting it. Instead what happens is that the body uses up its supply of these items to digest refined sugar. It happens so fast that refined sugar will leech out bodily reserves. In the meantime the body is convinced that it is getting "fuel."

You can do an experiment of sorts to check this out. Eat some fruit, maybe several oranges or a container of strawberries. Wait a bit, maybe 15 minutes, and then see if you crave something sweet, like a chocolate bar or pastry.
Chances are good that you won't crave it at all. IF you do eat it, you will find it not so appealing or that "you've got to have more."

Part of the craving of refined sugar comes from the way it depletes resources and at the same time sends signals that you have fuel to spare. Part of that is the so-called "sugar spike" the energy rush that convinces you you have plenty of energy. Right on its heels is the "sugar crash" which starts the craving for another [refined] sugar fix, which starts the cycle anew.

If you get the sugar naturally, as in fruit, then you will get a long slow rise in energy. Everything is present in the fruit to utilize and digest it.

These guys have some pretty good ideas about eliminating refined sugar from your diet.

Hi suzy,

Some people just have to avoid sugar 100% of the time just like a recovering alcoholic has to avoid alchol 100% of the time.

Best wishes,

Hi, Susy.

You are torturing yourself from a lack of knowledge about how this works. Read the home page articles about refined carbohydrates while you are waiting for Beth to send you her book. Do not try to resolve this problem without understanding what is in her book.

Let us know what you learn.

ANY refined carbohydrate is treated identically by your Krebs cycle. You have put yourself in a permanent state of withdrawal.

Walt
