I am experiencing a stomache ache everytime i take a multi-vitamin. I'm hoping this isn't a sign of a serious problem. The brand is "Spring Valley" one daily multivitamin/multimineral supplement for active adults. The pain usaully starts about 15 minutes after i take it. It feels like a burning sensation like i just did 1000 sit-ups . It last for about 15 minutes then goes away. Do you think i should stop taking this kind for now.
Thanks,
brad

I tried to look up this vitamin for the ingredients but could not locate it. Is there betaine hydrocloride in it? If there is this would cause it if you don;t need acid.
I would say there is something in it that is bothering you.
I have tried several multis myself multigenics is good if you need the betaine hydrocholoride acid(my son who is 18 had to stop this multi cause it caused burning. Otherwise I would suggest shaklee. I don;t sell shaklee and know they are a mlm company. But do trust there products and are madefrom food. I would stop taking it since it is bothering you. Your suppose to feel better not worse.

Hi, Brad.
Listen to Denise about Shaklee.
Most commercial preparations have an average of 35 different things in them (BESIDES THE VITAMINS & MINERALS) that are not required to be placed on the lable. If you were reacting to one of the vitamins, you would have to be dead. Since they are essential to life, you must be reacting to one of the other 35 things.
Changing brands would help.
Let us know what you learn.

Hi Denise,
I just checked the label and there is no betaine hydrochloride in it. There is potassium chloride though. There is also magnesium hydroxide and dicalcium phosphate. These are the first three ingredients on the label. I guess i will just take Dr. Stoll's advise and switch brands.
I definetely know that i'm not supposed to be feeling that burning sensation.

Hi! The potassium chloride and magnesium hydoxide can also do a great job on messing up your stomach - nausea, burning. Also, they usually list the ingredients by order of potency, although not always. You definitely need to get yourself a different brand, one without all these potentially stomach-irritating ingredients. I speak from my own humble experience with them, having had really bad reactions from burning in my stomach and nausea. If you really need a magnesium supplement, try magnesium glycinate - it's easy on the stomach. And as for the betaine hydrochloride, you can test yourself with it by itself. If it burns your stomach, you don't need it. And finally, if you really are concerned with potassium, just eat plenty of fruits and veggies.

Are you taking the multivitamin on an empty stomach or with food? Taking the vitamin with food, even a small amount, eases the burning and the upset stomach. My GI recommended this to me and I no longer get any stomach issues when I take my vitamins with food.

I have been using Shaklee for 2 yrs and still very occasionally get a stomachache when I take them all at once. You should take them at night when you go to bed, as you will sleep thru a stomachache. Also, you don't "urinate" them out, though that could be a wives tale.
Also, you could take half of them in the am, and half at night, so your system is not being disturbed all in one go. Shaklee is very, very good. But, I have just moved to the UK, and cannot get them here. Does anyone know of a UK equivalent to Shaklee? thanks, Catherine

I don't know, but if your stomach is hurting, isn't that a sign that something is wrong with WHAT you are taking and not how you are taking it? Personally, I wouldn't take them at night just because you are more likely to sleep through the pain.

Thanks, Donna E.
Eating something with vitamins and dividing the dosages are the most common recommendations for this situation--and ones I agree with. However, if THAT does not resolve the problem, I would agree with your solution.
Namaste`

Hi, Sarah.
Shaklee IS a pyramid scheme but still is one of the best products around. The pyramid just makes it cost more than it should. Of course, you CAN become a distributor and only distribute to yourself. That would save you about 50%.
The only product I know that is better (because it has a wider number of specific products) is Standard Process.
