TO HY - Your Health Problems

Posted by Maz on February 04, 2003 at 08:12:55:

Hi HY,

I read a recent post by you in which you listed all the supplements you take and said that all your lab tests came back normal, despite the years of health problems. I wonder if you could tell me what your health problems were.

Also, could you say what the "green food formula" you take is and what is carnosine and alpha lipoic acid.

Do you consider you are getting every nutrient in the right quantities. I am a bit concerned that I keep taking my vitamins and minerals in pill form and wonder if they every gt properly absorbed.

Why do you not take liquid magnesium as this nutrient is so lacking in our food today. How do you know the nutrient values of your supplements - ie. how much you are getting?

Here are the symptoms I had: Arthritis, IBS, colitis, LGS, parasites, hypoglycemia, anemia, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, anxiety, panic attacks, connective tissue deficiency, muscle wasting, muscle weakness and more.

The green food formula is "Perfect Food" by Garden Of Life

Yes. I believe I am getting every nutrient in the right amount. At least I am by today's standards. By tomorrow's standards, maybe not. I get my nutrients from whole foods and whole food supplements based on my genetics, imbalances, deficiencies, predispositions, and metabolism. I do this by testing, and also by the way I feel when I take the supplements.

The only "Isolated" supplements I am taking right now are:

1. Carnosine = carnosine is the best antidote to a process called GLYCATION. This is where sugar molecules combine with proteins in the body rendering them non-functional. This is a major contributing factor to the aging process.

2. Alpha-Lipoic Acid = This is a MASTER antioxidant because it is both fat AND water-soluble. It has the ability to scavange free-radicals through both water and fat-soluble cell membranes. It also has the ability to RECYCLE other antioxidants allowing them to continue doing their job. Taking ALA along with your other antioxidants can lengthen your free-radical protection by many hours. ALA also supports the health of the liver and the pancreas.

3. Coenzyme Q10 = This is naturally produced in the body although levels fall with age. It is essential for the correct functioning of the heart. It is a potent antioxidant, and it can actually protect the heart against stress caused by chronic bracing. It is also useful in the prevention and treatment of gum disease, receeding gums, and other periodontal problems. I take it for the all of the reasons mentioned.

4. Fish oil = I take fish oil simply because eating fish is too dangerous these days. The oil is as good as eating the fish if not better. I can get protein from other sources

5. I take certains herbs and vitamin formulas if I feel a cold coming on, if I injure myself, or if I need to bolster a particular organ or system. I take them for only a few days to a few weeks at a time. This is how herbs were meant to be used. Not to be taken daily day in and day out like vitamins. This is why I recommend AGAINST taking multi-vitamins containing low-dose (or even high dose for that matter) herbs
____________________________________________________________
I do not take liquid magnesium because I get plenty of it from my whole food supplements, grass-fed meats, and vegetable juices. I have a goat milk whey product that is excellent for this.

If you want to ensure complete digestion, you really need to know what factors hinder digestion. See the archives and let me know if you have any questions. For now, I hope that helps

Thanks, HY.

Now if people just understood that what you have found for yourself is the result of years of study and experimentation that might not be ideal for anyone else. My program has the same basis but is very different.

I have you to thank for my finally adding the Perfect Food supplement to my program.

You are welcome. I also hope for the same thing. People often ask me what my program is down to the timing of my food intake but that's not what should be relevant to people. People need to realize that I have figured out what MY body/mind needs and may not work for them. Also, this is CONSTANTLY a work in progress. My needs sometimes change weekly, sometimes daily. As you've said, it is different in everyone. However, if one is eating pure whole foods, chances are, they will eventually figure out what works. Learning from the archives and doing research will enable them to function more independently rather than have to take the advice of doctors they don't trust. I know that when I research, I am completely unbiased. I evaluate the research honestly, and make informed decisions. Many doctors have agendas and don't do this. I'd rather do it myself than to trust someone that could have an agenda of their own. In fact, it has been recently shown that a large percentage of drug ads that are advertised to doctors, contain FALSE information and studies regarding the drug. I don't have the exact figure but it is something like 45% or more. Scary isn't it?

Hi HY,

I found your post interesting and I have been wondering about something for a while, then I take the occasion to ask.

How do you deal with the cost of these supplements and your special diet on a permanent basis?

For example, Coenzyme Q10, PD, Perfect food and good quality fish oil at large dose is rather expensive.

Grass fed beef, Ostrich and high quality goat milk products are very expensive also, and I know you avoid pork, which is for me a cheap meat. I simply don't buy ostrich because it's horribly expensive by the pound and I need a rather large amount of meat in a meal to feel fulfilled.

I found myself that my diet + supplements (and for my spouse too) is already a lot more expensive than the "standard" diet of average people to a point that it has a non-negligeable impact on our budget and life style even if I am an engineer. I have almost nothing left to put aside for retirement. I don't want to imagine the cost of YOUR diet + YOUR supplements! (Not considering that it is rather time consuming for cooking and shopping for supplements)

You must have a very well paid job (or carreer) or maybe you decided to live a very simple life in order to invest that much in your health. Your recommandations seam impressively accurate, up-to-date and health promoting without any doubt, but they are not affordable for everybody.

Do you have special tricks or recommendations in order to save money on supplements and on H-G foods?
Any suggestions for cheap and quick high protein meals?

What brand and how much fish oil do you take?

What do you do when you need to eat in a restaurant?

Do you cheat sometimes?

Thanks

Serge

I'll get back to you with more specifics but first, I buy in MAJOR bulk. If you find a willing retailer, you could end up paying between $23-25.00 per bottle or less. Most GOL products go for no less than $31.50. I buy more than $1000 at a time. This lasts me the whole year and sometimes beyond. I am saving hundreds to thousands a year like that.

The Ostrich, Goat milk, and grass-fed beef ARE expensive. I have the Goat kefir 5x a week, Ostrich 2x per week, and beef 2-3x per week. Sometimes, I just eat organic, conventionally-fed beef which is much cheaper. Also, I save money but NOT buying junk food.

I don't buy many organic fruits and vegetables. I only buy organic for the fruits/vegetables that contain the MOST pestidies. For example, I will ONLY buy organic strawberries since strawberries have the worst pesticide content of ALL the fruits. I buy a fruit/vegetable wash to get as many of the pesticides off the foods as possible.

I have a garden so I grow what would normally be expensive items. My garden is all organic and saves me tons of money at the store.

Also, I don't eat A LOT because every meal I eat contains TONS of nutrition. I am satisfied even though I eat less than most. This also saves me money.

I DO have a well-paying job but for your info, I added on some extra work JUST for my food/supplement practices. To my way of thinking, you can have all the beautiful cars, houses, toys, and furniture, but if your sick, disabled, or DEAD, you can't enjoy! For me, it's health FIRST, everything else second. That's just the way I am. I hope that helps

If you are going to do a one-day per week detox, your better off doing it on merely vegetable juices and possibly a protein-replacement powder and a green-food formula.

I do this SOMETIMES, but not so much anymore. My daily diet is so live in raw, easily digestible live foods, that I am detoxing 24 hours a day. I am not a big fan of too many RAW vegetables but I do juicing, salads 1-2x per day, and cultured vegetables at EVERY meal. This ensures that I get the most out of my food. I enjoy eating this way and I try to duplicate this, even if I am on vacation. I once brought a portable fridge with 7 days worth of raw goat yogurt and cultured vegetables on a cruise. On the 7th day, EVERYONE in my party got sick from the fish that night at dinner. Everyone, except me :-) I had probiotics, lactic acid, and increased immunity from easily-absorbed nutrition on my side. Also, I ALWAYS bring my green food supplement with me in case the food quality is low.

I noticed your not a big fan of too many raw veggies. Is there a reason for this or just preference?

I was recently told by a colon therapist not to eat fermented veggies until the parasite issue is resovled. Do you think there is any validity to this?

Thanks HY,

It gives me a good idea.

If you find organic beef MUCH cheaper than grass-fed beef, I don't want to know the price of grass-fed beef! Maybe the prices where you live are not the same as here, but here the price of organic beef is about twice the price of regular commercial beef and you can hardly find something else than ground beef.

Personnaly, I buy my beef from a few independant farmers I know who raise their cattle only on grass, free of pesticides and hormones. At worst, they give them only a little grains during the winter as a complement, but it's only a very limited amount. They usually give them the whole plant, not only the grains. I buy it by half or a quarter of a beef at a time, all vaccuum bag frozen, with the cuts and sizes I want. I get all the parts I want (including liver, heart, kidneys, bones, etc.)I keep it in my freezer. Considering that it's a very lean meat, by the pound, it's almost less expensive than commercial regular beef. Last year, I bought 2 halves + 1 quarter only for my spouse and me and my little daughter.

When I can, I do the same thing for my chicken and occasionnaly my pork. Last year, I had to upgrade my freezer for a bigger model.

Bulk buy for supplements is a good idea, I have been thinking about it for a while but I don't know how to do it. I have got to find a way the buy fish oil that way.

I am not surpised you say you don't eat a lot. I was expecting it. That's a logical way of saving. Actually, I have got the bad habit of over-eating from my obsession of gaining weight. I will try to change it. Anyway, I don't put on any weight whether I eat normally or like a pig, it makes no difference. The extra food is probably just overloading my digestive system and do more harm than good.

I also save by not buying junk food (but this money goes easily on nut butters only) and mostly by avoiding eating in restaurants (but this is a bit hard on social life)

People around me look at me as a health nut and can't figure out why I avoid so many things and why I spend so much, but what about you!! How do you deal with that?

Thanks.

Serge

Another thing that ticks me off abokut the cost of "health" products is the expiration date.

For instance I pay 5 dollars for goats milk cheese. Even though its a small package, you have to consume the whole thing within 3 days. I almost always end up wasting it, as I only use the cheese on crackers. I mean THREE days, come on! :)
