my vitamins make me sick

Posted by holi on April 09, 2003 at 12:25:30:

I've recently started taking a multi-vitamin. The problem is that they seem to make me feel very nauseated. (Not every time, but over half the time) I would take them after breakfast, which is usually oatmeal, and figured that maybe I didn't have enough food in my stomach. I began taking them in the evenings after dinner and I still get very sick feeling. 10 minutes after taking the vitamin I really think I'm going to throw up, then the feeling either passes or I take Pepto and that gets rid of the nausea. I stopped taking them for a few days and needless to say I experienced no nausea. I want to be able to take vitamins; they seem to make my skin clearer and my hair feel healthier. Why are my vitamins making me sick and what can I do to stop it?

Which brand is it and what are the ingredients of your vitamin?

You should really try to see which ones you need and only take those, instead of a multi. (there is a lot of info on this board to see what you might or might not need)

You need to try different vitamins. A better quality one perhaps, with no allergens.

Some people do better with no vitamins.

Hi Holly, I have the same thing happen with multi-vitamens that are too high in Vit B. I started taking multi-vitamens that are 100% natural and mostly herbs. There is a difference in how the vitamens are made. It your viamens are making you feel nauseated, then they might be too strong for you. I never get sick taking herbs.

Some people do better with no vitamins.

Im 48 and Ive never taken vitamins, ever. I get occasional colds, influenza once in awhile, and thats about it. I hope I stay that way. Good genes help too.

There is obviously something in the vitamin that is not agreeing with you. Does this vitamin contain herbs? If so, stop taking it. Herbs are not meant to be taken as daily vitamins and can contribute to the nausea. You may also be reacting to fillers and binders in the product or it may just be that you don't handle isolated vitamins very well. Try the LIVING MULTI at www.crohns.net, silverspringsupplements.net or some other outlet that you can find a good price

Hi, Holi.

You know that the cheaper vitsmins have an average of 35 additives in them that the manufacturers are not required to put on the lable (preservatives, colorings, binders, bulking agents, etc.). Nearly every "reaction" to multivitamins are reactions to one or many of these.

On the other hand Robert W Gardiner of Brigham Young Uni, wrote that fat soluble vitamins E and K, as well as riboflavin and folic acid have caused reactions. "Megavitamin treatment of food allergy patients scarcely seems reasonable... .
