Hypothyroidism and selenium

Posted by Renee on May 15, 2003 at 18:42:45:

Hi, I've been hypothyroid for years and want to start supplementing with the 200 mg of selenium as recommended on this board. BUT, I thought that while supplementing with replacement hormone the thyroid would not regenerate; i.e. there would be no reason for the gland to produce hormone if blood levels were adequate.

So what is the recommended course? Taper myself off replacement therapy after taking the selenium for a few months, then have thyroid levels rechecked? Or just start taking the selenium while continuing to take the thyroid (but wouldn't this be nonproductive?)?

Thanks.

Hi, Rene.

I would not change anything but take the 200 mcg of selenium once a day for a year and then let us know how you are doing.

Selenium made my condition worse (Hashimoto's) -- it made the swelling more pronounced and the thyroid more achy.

Not all selemium products are safe and effective

According to Mark Konlee at Keep Hope Alive, "Plant-based products are safe and effective. L-selenomethionine (man-made version) is not an amino acid chelate, and is neither safe nor effective."

Go to http://www.keephope.net/j20031.html and search for selenium (for computer illiterate: use your browser's ability to search for text on a page), and you will find some interesting info.

Hi, Kimberly.

What you really need is the information in the Graves archives and then serious wellness.

Let us know what you learn.

I read through the information and he is recommending people take toxic levels of selenium (1000 mcg or higher), of course they will have adverse reactions. Poor source of information, IMO.

They didn't have any noticeable benefits either until they started to take a natural form of selenium.

As far as the doses recommended by him being toxic, it's all relative. His recommendations come from clinical experience of doctors achieving real success with their patients, including those with "incurable" diseases.

Jake, why don't you start or join a "I don't believe what's real" club!

Thnaks, R.

In this I agree with Jake!

First of all do not take any one study as meaning anything. ALL findings have to be replicated by other researchers.

Until 5 years ago most professionals thought that ANY selenium was toxic, like lead or mercury, etc. It has only been in the past 10 years that it was known that small amounts of selenium were very beneficial. Over 300 mcg a day is too risky and 200 mcg a day is perfect.

Anyone testing 1000 mcg a day is a maniac.

Unless it's Ester-C? I haven't seen a peer reviewed study (much less more than one) that demonstrates better efficacy of Ester-C over ascorbic acid.

I am sure tests that have lead "most professionals" form their current opinion were done with a synthetic form of selenium.

And why is 200 mcg perfect? What form? Have you seen 200 mcg help anyone? Mark Konlee's experience is that it doesn't.
