What is wrong with just eating the right foods instead of taking vitamins and supplements? As long as you are healthy and have no major issues, save the money you would spend on the expensive supplements and put it toward buying orgainc food. I have been eating a healthy, organic diet for years and have had no need for supplementing. I think that the vitamin industry goes over board with promoting vitamins when we can get all we need from food (as long as it is organic). Follow the money trail....who is profitting?

I generally agree however, I have read that many organic foods of today are far less nutritious than the past. So I take whole food concentrates from Garden of Life to give me an added boost.

Dont rely on the hope that the foods you eat will contain adequate amounts of the eighty some plus nutrients you body needs for optimum health. This is typical western medicine bull and diversion. Not only can farming and processing practices diminish foods nutritive properties but in this day and age we are bombarded with thousands of toxins everyday that can take a nasty toll on our health. There is no way possible you can get all the nutrients you need from just eating some vegetables or whatever everyday especially if you are a late comer to healthy living and have numerous years of accumulated junk and filth to deal with.

Something often left out of this debate is that it isn't what goes into your mouth but what you absorb that counts. If you're absorbing all your food and it's organic, you shouldn't need supplements. Question is, are people today able to lead a low-stress enough life to really absorb their food. Then Walt Stoll's 'need for a three-legged stool' enters the debate and there we have it: destressing and addressing life issues are at least as vital as any multivitamins, so there's no point taking the multivitamins either unless you're onto addressing all the unhealthy aspects of your life...I guess my answer would be (reluctantly), these days, yes, maybe you do need the vitamins as well unless you're living way outside from city life (including living in the city but not stressing).

I totally agree, this is all the more reason I take Garden of Life products. They test their product's nutritional contents and values. These are HIGHLY concentrated whole food suppliments. It often takes 40-50 pounds of their veggies/fruits to get one pound of concentrate so they are low calorie nutritionaly dense. With all of the literally thousands of co-factors around natural vitamins/minerals found only in whole foods, they are much more likely absorbed at the cellular level. Isolated or synthetic suppliments enter the bloodstream but, can fail to make it to the cells at adequate levels where they are needed. This is why I will never go back to isolated suppliments. I took these for years and never felt any better, since starting with Garden of Life, I have felt the difference.

Thanks, Joanne.
Listen to John, Michael and Jane. Even the AMA now says that a multivitmin is recommended for everyone--->after 100 years of pooh-poohing the whole idea.
You would enjoy reading the seminal statement by the Founding President of the National Health Foundation about this very subject. It is a list of statements starting with IF........ I wish I had it right at hand.
Let me know if you have trouble finding it and I will try to find it.
Choose your company carefully. In my opinion, stuff like "One a Day" or "Stresstabs" are less than worthless.
Perfect Food by gardenoflifeusa is helpful.

I never believed in suppliments Unless they did something
for me I could feel.. My dad believed in them but and took
them Though he ate often and everything. He told me it
would take Months to notice a difference. I had Nothing to
improve so wasn't going to try to since if I damaged myself
I would be kicking myself.
After a devistating chemical injury I have tried every
suppliment that Sounds like it will help. A few have so I
took them. If they stopped or something worked better or
made them and themselves Not necessary, I didn't take
either except to see if they would help something else.
Zinc used to help a Lot with pains but MSM made that not
necessary. They say that zinc is good for the prostate but
then some say too much is bad. I have a friend who takes it
and saw palmetto to protect it. I tried saw SP and it gave
me headaches so I take neither.
Taking a multi Did help with muscle aches and stoped me
from catching a cold, a few days after physical activity
that did me in but since that isn't a problem now, I rarely
try them. To ME and my experience, if something is needed
it will help something. I have boxes and boxes of supps and
maybe 5 have helped but even they sit if they don't.

Steven,
In my opinion, Centrum is one of those worthless ones. See supplements archives.

I agree with Walt re: the Centrum. Read the ingredients listed on the label and you will probably agree. I mean, artifical coloring and flavoring on VITAMINS? Jeez.

Then which one would you guys recommend? I have a Vitamin Shoppe near me so that would be ideal. Please keep in mind I have to break the pill as I have major trouble swallowing pills. Thanks.

First, Steven.
Understand whenever you eat anything your esophagus is designed to swallow a "bolus" the size of a ping pong ball. If you were not terrified of swallowing a pill that is the size of pill you could swallow with ease.
Once you have gotten past this you will have lots of choices.

I have had people tell me that my whole life. I know this. It just doesn't happen for me. I had an incident as a child where a tylenol got stuck in my throat and I vomited to get it out. After that, swallowing any pills has been a problem. I know that I can do it, but it just does not happen. Ive tried to hide it in food, to sit there and swallow, plain, with tons of water, nothing has worked.
