My 20 year old son has tried unsucessfully over the past couple of years to take multi-vitamins or supplements of any
kind. When he does, his main complaint is a feeling
that his brain is mush. One brand of vitamins caused
major palpitations and shortness of breath, i.e. panic
attacks? Now, I understand there is quite possibly
some sort of allergy-type situation going on but how
to know exactly what vitamin/ingredient is causing it? In an effort to make it simpler, he has even tried
single vitamins; mainly E with selenium & Ester C
thinking that at least he was getting the three major
antioxidants. This failed too, causing the same
symptoms. So, next, he tried powdered formulations,
thinking that this would cut down on extra fillers but
this still did not work as he still developed "mush
brain" as he calls it. There was sugar in some of
these powered formulations but he can drink a coke
with no problem, so I don't think it's the sugar.
The problem he is having is causing me great concern
because with the lessened nutritional value of today's
food, I feel everyone should supplement. Especially
someone like my son, who doesn't really eat all that
well. Any suggestions, insight, or possible
solutions would be greatly appreciated! Any ideas on
what would cause his body to reject vitamins besides
allergies? Any ideas on how to remedy this problem,
although I suspect a simple solution is not that easy.

could be a problem with fillers, coatings, who knows?
I'd suggest simply more attention to nutrition and buying whatever food you can afford to buy organic. If he's able to eat apples, carrots, vegetable oil, and such without problems, just concentrate on his eating the right foods and avoid junk foods.

Hi Ann,
I am the same way as your son. Hypersensitive systems dont do well on conventional vitamins. I have tried sooo many even natural ones. The Ester C makes my heart race and skip as well. I have found one group of products that does not cause many symptoms, Garden of Life products, like the Superfood, the Fruit powder, etc. go to www.gardenoflifeusa.com and read up. I still can only take baby doses of this, but at least I can take them, good luck, Juli p.s. supplements can actually harm people, and I believe isolated vitamins will one day become extinct, because the body does not recognize them without all their many components. The trend is going in the direction of Garden of Life products, whole food supplements vs. isolated vitamins.

Hi, Stumped.
By far the most likely cause is him reacting to one, or more, of the at least 35 additives in many vitamin formulations that the FDA allows manufacturers to omit from the lable saying they are "inert" and thus of no importance: colorings, binders, emulsifiers, expanders, etc.
He needs to use a manufacturer that states, on the lable, that no such additives are in the product. Try "Standard Process" for example.
Let us know how he does.
