Synthetic vitamins / nutritional supplements

Posted by a [143.2761] on December 03, 2008 at 21:08:12:

I take many supplements and many of them are whole foods supplements, such as Garden of Life products. However, I'm sure I'm consuming some synthetic ones as well. Are these terrible for you? When Walt suggests taking magnesium, for example, how does one go about getting mag that is more like a whole food vs. synthetic?

magnesium is a mineral, and there may be different forms, but don't think they are synthetic.

I think the B vitamins are the hardest to get from a non-synthetic source. dd is well versed on this topic, you can probably contact her through the OT site since she may not be checking here.

Are you sure you need all those supplements? Anything you injest that is not food, still has to be processed just like food and too many supplements can be just as bad as not enough.

I read a book on whole food vitamins. From what I can remember they had performed research on mice where they brought them to near starvation and then gave them vitamins. The ones on synthetic vitamins improved very rapidly compared to the whole food ones, but as the study continued the synthetic ones began dying as the whole food ones began thriving. The theory being that the body needs to provide some of its reserves in order to process the synthetic versions.

Do you remember the name of the book BMO? That sounds very interesting and makes a lot of sense. I'm not sure synthetics make sense in any way if we're keen on whole food nutrition. Who knows how the body will metabolise isolated vitamins? It makes sense to stick with something as close to nature as possible, since we are nature in essence. I have thought for a long time that teaching synthetic vitamins as a supplement while advocating a whole food diet is a contradictory philosophy.

Interesting study. It's results go along with my professional experience.

Walt, doesn't this study contradict advice to supplement with anything of synthetic origin? If you believe so, do you advocate deriving all nutrition from natural and organic foods? Or wouldn't you go that far? Is there a compromise? I feel this area is very confusing.

UK,

Remember that there is a big difference between "pharmacological" effects of nutrient dosage and "nutritional" effects of dosage. See vitamins archives.

I wonder what Reserves they are talking about, Nutrients? If the mice were near starvation, why wouldn't the synthetics take them right out? Don't think they would have Any reserves. They say too many multi vitamins increases the likelyhood of cancer. Maybe too much of a Good thing, is Bad... Too much food is supposed to be, shortening lifespan.

Book is called: Why do I need Whole Food Supplements by C.N. Lorrie Medford. I got it from my chiropractor. I haven't looked back as to the exact details of the study but I can look it up tomorrow.

Thanks, UK.

It is a bit confusing for everyone. MY understanding is that, in nearly all cases, it is smarter to get all nutrients from unrefined, and a very widely ranging number, of foods. See the archives: remember that humans lived on about 150,000 different species of foods during our hunter-gatherer existance. When we "graduated" to an agricultural society, we droped our diet to about 10,000 species. Today we typically live on about 500 species.

Sonewhere, between the 10,000 species and the 500 species, we began to lose our way. IF an individual lived upon about 10,000 species for all their lives, it is unlikely that the chronic degenerative diseases we are now experiencing would eventually require any of the pharmacological doses of nutrients, only available from synthetic nutrients, to attempt to reverse those conditions.

The GOL natural and widely ranging trace nutrients are an attempt at replacing at least some of the 9,500 species that modern technology, and habits, have robbed us of.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Thanks everyone! Are there synthetics used in minerals also, or only vitamins? What about magnesium glycinate?
