Link between Zinc and Stomach Acid

Posted by vickir on September 19, 2001 at 18:59:20:

Namaste, Walt

As promised, here's a follow-up report on my experiments with the effect of supplemental zinc on stomach acid production.

On 18 Aug, I reduced my daily intake of supplemental zinc from 55mg to 30mg.
By 22 Aug, I was beginning to experience respiratory congestion after meals. (On the plus side, the middle-of-the-night heartburn I had been having all but stopped.)
Between 22 Aug and 10 Sep, I had to take supplemental HCl almost daily to prevent congestion.
On 10 Sep, I increased my intake of zinc to 42mg. Within 3 days, the congestion problem had all but stopped, even after ingestion of cheese and yogurt (dairy products being the worst triggers).
I have had a few attacks of heartburn just before getting up in the morning but not severe ones (quickly controlled by chewing a couple of DGL tablets). My goal is to fine-tune my zinc dosage to the point that it prevents congestion without promoting heartburn.

What about trying to encapsulate the Zn to see if it
wouldn't bother your stomach. I used to have to take Zn for
muscle aches and sometimes took it with aspirins when I
was already hurting some and had a lot of work to do. I
don't and didn't get heartburn but would get an ache in my
stomach if I took too much of either. Since taking MSM I
have No need for either.

Vince, do you have a recommended brand of MSM? I remember you once mentioned that some brands worked better than others for you. I want to add it to my regimen.

Thanks.

do you have anything in particular that you are trying to
help or cure ?? What has helped and solved problems for me
and haven't been needed after a short time unless that part
has been stressed severly again were, Nature's Bounty brand
for sinuses, Natrol brand for my knees, and Sundown brand
for muscle aches after strenuous physical activity like
lifting weights. What amazes me is it takes something
extreme happening to these parts to even need them again.

If you have nothing in particular you are trying to fix or
it isn't one of these than I would try any. I have a few
that don't seem to do anything for me.
