Dear Margaret,

No one should eat more than 15% of their total calories as fat and, YES, you would have to include the flaxseed oil in that amount. However, you will find that your maintainance dose will be insignificant in relation to your total.

Hello. You can benefit by some study on nutrition. I recommend you go to the library and get "Your body knows best" by Ann louise Gittleman (or something like that). She explains why you NEED fat to loose weight, expecially O-3 and O-6s (like Flax seed oil). Olive oil is great. All fats, however, are not created equal.

Thats not to say to drink a cup of the stuff. Per gram, fats yield more than twice the calories that a carbo or protien do. So too much fat - too much anything - and you will gain weight. Her book will teach you the danger of "No Fat" diet, and the subsequent danger of hi carbo (e.g. people eat a bag of pretzles and think they are doing themselves good, just because the bag says "cholesterol free", or "zero fat". This is NOT the case.)

Hi,

I'm on the recommended "Essential Oils". I was just wondering just how many fat grams are in 2000 mg of Flaxseed oil.

ALL fats & oils have 9 calories per gram. 2000 milligrams are 2 grams. Thst means you are talking about 18 calories.

I don't think this is a concern given the relatively small quantity of flax seed oil you need to consume for the benefits inherent in this oil.

Try using it as a substitute for other oils. I mix it with raw apple cider vinigar and some spices for a very nice salad dressing. (add a little dry mustard to get the oil and vinegar to mix better).

Re: Anyone know of healing power of Papaya?

Posted by Taylor on June 04, 1998 at 20:13:32:

Hi! I am a massage therapist and over the last 9yrs had heard many times that Papaya contains an enzyme that reduces swelling in joints. I have had mixed results depending on the "organic-ness" of the fruit and whether or not it was fresh or dried. Example: Supermarkets often carry a dried dyed variety that, for me had no effect. The organic variety often found in health food stores however has provided remarkable relief. It has also helped me at times of soreness in the joints to drink purifying teas. Ultimately though fresh Papaya has been the most effective for me. sincerely, Tay

It's just that when the hype sounds too good to be true it probably is. It is obvious you don't know a thing about this board and what goes on here, so it's clear what passing on the "good news" really means. This is not a sales board, and I hope someone purges this inflated sales pitch soon.

Dear Jimmy,

It sounds like you have fallen for the propaganda the drug companies have used for many years to keep us paying a lot for our pills. "Potency" means nothing when it comes to effectiveness! This is such a poorly understood definition that I have even made an article trying to protect people from being fooled just as you have been (according to your note).

Go to the link: What is Potency?.

I am not saying that your product is no good. It is just that it is not good because of increased "potency". All that means is that you can get the same effect from a smaller pill---what good is that?

vitamin tablets vs. capsules

Posted by dp on June 21, 1998 at 15:36:53:

i'd like comments regarding the effectiveness of nutrients in capsule vs. tablet form. i know capsule are supposed to dissolve and be absorbed better. but the best formulae i find are in tablets. and tablets are invariably considerably cheaper. any thoughts?

The best distributions system for bioavailability of the source substance,
absorbtion-wise, is through capsules that can be pulled apart. Tablets have
been proven in many cases to pass completely through the digestive system without
having been digested or depositing any of the source material into the body.
The absorb moisture and are passed with stool. Capsules fair somewhat better, but are
still subject to the same problems as tablets. If taken with food, there is still a
risk of having the capsule stay intact, with the food acting as a shield for the capsule.
Digestion may be hindered by the presence of the capsule, or digestion my procede with
incident, except that the capsule is only partially digested and it may not "spew" out
enough of its contents to for you body to make effective use of it. The best delivery
system is by far liquid supplementation. Under-the-tongue if possible, or in water.
Second best is a pull-apart capsule where the powdered) contents can be mixed in
a liquid or moist food.

I agree completely with Cybermage's comments. I'd like to add that the processing of tablets usually uses high heat which has been known to distroy much of the good qualities of the vitamins and minerals you are trying to take. There may also be some concern about the fillers used in tablets to make them keep their shape. If you are trying to deal with, for example, candida related syndrome, you will need to be on a perfect whole food diet. Many tablets will have corn starch added. Even this small amount of processed food can create problems. Of course, you also have to be cautious about the additives in capsules. This can be a huge challenge.

Vitamin Optimization

Dear CyberMage:

Please don't pull your hair by the comments and questions below. They are honest and I am looking forward to hearing what your comments and suggestions are.

I am glad to see these postings, because I had the same doubts about the vitamins efficacy. In fact I heard arguments that "they were a waste of money because they were not absorbed by the body". From your replies I get the feeling that these people were at least partially right, unless you took the vitamins in the sub-lingual form.

However, I usually get the cheapest vitamins and minerals (from discount dept. stores and pharmacies). You may think I am cheap but they have worked reasonably well for me. To get the most of them :

1. I guess taking them in an empty stomach, like an hour before meals, will be better than taking them with meals or after meals. Is this correct? Any exceptions?
2. I usually give a couple of bites (not chew) to the solid vitamins or minerals to make them smaller and easier for the stomach acids to attack. I am aware that vitamin C should not be chewed because its acidity may dissolve the teeth. Do you see any problems with chewing the other vitamins/minerals? I am thinking about multivitamins, B-complex, Ca/Mg, Potassium, Zn. In this way the particles will be small enough to be easily attacked by the stomach acids.
3. Vitamin E gels (if they don't taste too bad) could be broken by the teeth and swallow broken.

One last question that you or the good Dr. may be able to guide me with. My total cholesterol is very good (168), but by GOOD HDL cholesterol is low (29, in a "good" range of 35-55). Any suggestions on how to raise the good cholesterol.

Thank you, in advance, for your comments & help.

OK, let's see if we can deliver the goods.

1. I guess taking them in an empty stomach, like an hour
before meals, will be better than taking them with meals
or after meals. Is this correct? Any exceptions?

Vitamins are not "standalone" components of a diet. The idea is to

1. Supplement a meal which may be deficient, and
2. Balance the collective nutrients of the body in the correct ratios.
A certain amount of the vitamin is not going to survive the
digestion process. The idea is to take enough to compensate
fo this. I have found (no sarcasm intended) that it is best
to read the label for individual vitamins. It is best not to
mix and match, unless the vitamins are premixed (such as
Life Extension Mix for example). This is because the formula
is designed for absorbtion, and to survive the digestion
process long enough for the necessary components to break
down and still make it to the intestines where they "do their work."

2. I usually give a couple of bites (not chew) to the solid vitamins or minerals to make them smaller and easier for the stomach
acids to attack.

Not a bad idea except that chewing may lodge pieces of the
tablet in your teeth. You will then have to brush your teeth
because often these tablets are highly acidic.

I am aware that vitamin C should not be chewed because its acidity may dissolve the teeth. Do you see any
problems with chewing the other vitamins/minerals?

Yes. Potassium and/or zinc can cause severe stomach upset
if taken on an empty stomach. I remember reading that in
taking those particular supplements one should be careful
because they become rather ornery when taken with (for
example) grapefruit juice.

I am thinking about multivitamins, B-complex, Ca/Mg,
Potassium, Zn. In this way the particles will be small
enough to be easily attacked by the stomach acids.

If you have a specific purpose in mind, then it will
be easier to decide what to take. I tend to agree with
Mr. Wray in that you get what you pay for. Unless you the
brand is well-known, you are probably getting substandard
vitamins. It is impossible to ascertain what kind of
deficiency you may have, its severity, and so one. However
it appears that it is not severe enough to need high quality
supplementation. (BTW that's just my opinion)

The good doctor will have to help you with your questions
regarding cholesterol.

I, personally, use tablets.

If one has severe leaky gut syndrome, they might use the capsules (along with a good quality of digestive enzymes) till the LGS can be dealt with.

The quality of the company is more important than the form of the oral stuff.

To the best of my knowledge I do not have any deficiencies. Lately I have increased my vitamin intake as I am trying to get rid of a torn meniscus in the knee w/o surgery. (with a chiropractor, glucosamine sulfate and limited exercises)

The vitamins I take are major brand but they are cheap. I usually get synthetics instead of naturals etc.

What does BTW means?

Thank you for your reply.

Your comment was interesting. I thought water would help in dissolving and in the adsorption of the vitamins.

What is large quantities? I usually take 2-glasses of water with my meals (about 1-pint each).

If I take the vitamins before meals I usually take one glass of water with them.

Thank you.

Thanks, Cybermage!

I couldn't agree more. See my note yesterday about supplemental digestive enzymes. However, even with them, tablets sometimes are found in the stool. The reason capsules are not seen so readily is that the capsule material itself dissolves & the contents diffuse throughout the stool & is not seen with the naked eye.

I thought I had heard somewhere that that was the case. (and I was effected) I take Synthroid and Plaquinel, for hypothyroid and rheumatoid arthritis. My Rhuematologist said I have "undifferentiated connective tissue disorder" which essential involves the above, including tired and sick feeling alot. Thanks for your help, Kristy

In Reply to: Re: Vitamin Optimization posted by Antonio on June 23, 1998 at 14:28:21:

Dear Antonio & Peter,

The vitamins are optimized to the average person. This means they are assuming that the person has at least the minimum amount (and variety) of digestive enzymes produced in the GI tract.

Unfortunately, in this culture, the majority of people over 40 do not have that minimum. Of the people with health problems, nearly none have enough.

If people take much water with them, they further dilute the necessary enzymes which are probably already too low for optimal absorbtion. For those people a good multi digestive enzyme product would help. Check with your local Naturopath or nutritionally savvy Chiropractor for advice.

Water will not help dissolve the product.

Also, since someone else mentioned this----chewing the tablets might not be the best idea. Some vitamins should not be released in the stomach and are coated to only dissolve in the small intestine. Those are basically destroyed if they are broken in the mouth.

There should be instructions on the lable about which is best for which product.

Dear Richard,

I am not an expert Herbalist but we do have one linked to our 'site.

MY impression of Noni is that it is like blue-green algae, bee pollen and other complex things from nature that have at least hundreds of healthy things in them. They are much too complex to test except empirically and the conventional medical monopoly doesn't even think that way let alone be willing to test something that is available without a prescription.

Our bodyminds are the only laboratories complex enough to test this stuff. SO, the only way to find out if it is going to help any individual is for that person to try it. It is not likely to hurt them &, if they don't try anything else at the same time, they should--pretty reliably-- be able to tell if it helps. In my experience, these complex things help some people & not others.

tremors

in my thumb and index finger of one hand, while it was at
rest. The Dr. called it "pill rolling" and said it was a

Dear Martha,

You are NOT out of the woods. Early on, both Parkinson's AND essential tremor come & go. "Essential" just means we have no ieea what causes it. For strictly conventional docs, there are a LOT of "essential" tremors.

High doses of antioxidents, good trace mineral supplementation (at your age you will need some digestive enzymes with your supplements) and the usual wellness stuff is the best we know.

Of course, with ANY degenerative neurological disorder, high doses of a balanced B complex will help along with the above. Essential oils should be used at least until there has been no recurrence for 6 months.

If you live long enough you will likely have this develop again even if you do all of this--UNLESS we learn more about this in the meantime.
