Dear Doctor'
I'm desperate-over 1 1/2 years ago, I was doing back and leg exercises(the leg exercises being sort of kick boxing) 2 days later, I went from being a person who could do health walks and had no history of hip, thigh or leg pain and no difficulty walking to waking up 2 days after these exercises with rising from bed and having such pain in the anterior area where the tops of the legs join with the torso , could not lie on the sides of my hips, severe pain after sitting when I would rise and try to start to walk---the tops of my leg joints were stiff and extremely painful when i tried to walk--this has been going on over 1 l/2 years-an orthopedist diagnosed it as trochanter bursitis, but I don't know if that diagnosis is even correct--U/S and heat packs make it worse -it causes severe stiffness and pain in the muscles of my anterior thigh--they've tried numerous cortisone sots to the trochanter area spaced out--that helps somewhat but it comes back--most of my problem is when I sit for any length of time and then try to stand up and walk(the ligament or tendon area in the outer lateral area of the groin gets stiff and painflu as well as the anterior thigh muscles and I can barely get my legs to move-this has affected my mobility and things I used to be able to do and I dread the thought of sitting because I know I will be in severe pain and stiffness when I try to stand and start to walk--I am desperate for any diagnosis possibilities it might be and some course of treatment that would help--I had X-rays which show no arthritis and a pelvic and hip MRI one year ago where they were looking for pelvic tumors which was negative-any suggestions-this is physically and emotionally wearing me out--it is so bad I can't work--would going to a sports medicine doctor help-I don't know what to do anymore--thankl you for your time in reading this.
Respectfully,
Mary

Hi Mary,
Maybe this will help until Dr. Stoll or other professionals reply.
A couple of us on this message board have had problems with this and there was some discussion a couple of months ago. Not sure if that is still on the board somewhere, but what came of it is that two of us had the head of the femur misaligned in the hip socket. You may want to visit a chiropractor (take your x-rays and other diagnostic results along) and find out if this is the case with you. If so, getting that adjusted/reset should bring you some immediate relief while you work on correcting the cause.
I'm sure Dr. Stoll and others will tell you that chronic bracing is contributing to your problems and that doing twice-daily skilled relaxation (SR) will help. Look those terms up in the glossary for more information. In my experience, you need more help than that.
My problems have not been as severe as yours, but I have had a lot of pain and inflammation in the trochanter areas of both sides for quite a few years. I'm sure I have flare-ups of bursitis in those areas. I am finally getting some relief through strengthening and stretching exercises, chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy with a practitioner who is very well versed in body mechanics and trigger point therapy, and I have had three Rolfing sessions so far. You might want to consult with a sports medicine doctor or a physical therapist to look into the proper exercises for your condition so you don't make things worse. At this point, if it were me, I would be more concerned about relief and getting to the core of the problem to fix it, than with an exact diagnosis, because I don't think that would change the treatment. It's likely that you have other structural problems that are contributing, like low back misalignment, tilted or twisted pelvis, weak or shortened psoas and other abdominal muscles, neck & upper back misalignment, possibly from an injury or long-standing body stress, combined with an injury that put you over the edge. Everything is connected.
There is probably a lot of information in the archives on this board, if you can find the right topic to search on. Wishing you the best. Please keep us posted.

Hi Mary, It must be dreadful to live in such pain. I dont know if this will be of any help but I am putting my two bit say in anyway.
Bursitis= inflamation. It has been known that night shade vegetables when consumed tend to increase pain levels in cases of inflamation. Try to cut off intake of tomatoes , potatoes and egg plant. Celery is supposed to help. This will not treat the problem, but it will certainly help to reduce the pain. Good luck!

Mary, is your colon moving well these days and have you ever considered doing perhaps an enima? This area of the body i have seen very sore like that when there is some traped toxins in colon. I can feel that the left lower rear of your body, little lower then hip, is very sore. If i were you i would do an enima and i would back off of some of the meats and proteins and any wheat, also get to a person who can do deep accupressure and work on those area's; Also have her work on the knee in the back on them. Thought patterns that can use a little affirmations on are- Financial-abundance flowing [see this] Inner peace is unfolding [see that] and drink more water, had to add my favorite thing these days; ha! It feels like some of these things will move you thru all of it; I think your PH. is off also; Get a acid alkaline chart and follow food plan for getting your p.h normal 6.7-7.0;

Hi, Mary.
Traumatic trochanteric bursitis can be a bear!
Listen to Terri-Lynn, zarin & nutmeg!
MY further suggestion would be to start at least 3 times a week under water exercises and daily "Synergetics" by Hay & Hay.
IF you have copies of ALL your medical records in your hand it MIGHT be helpful to see a sports medicine specialist.
Let us know how you do and what you learn.

Hi Mary,
If it feels worse with heat, sounds like the area is inflammed. Heat makes inflammation worse, so try ice instead.
Everyone gave good suggestions. Mine is to try massage therapy, especially since X-rays and MRI's didn't show anything. It could be that the muscles need to be relaxed -- it's amazing how painful tight or spastic muscles can be. Go to a therapist who specializes in deep tissue or neuromuscular therapy. There are also massage therapists who specialize in sports medicine.
If that simple solution doesn't help, you might also try a chiropractor or physical therapist. The chiropractor can tell you if skeletal misalignment is contributing to the problem, the physical therapist can give you exercises and stretches that help restore muscular integrity to the affected area.
Also read the articles and archives about bracing and skilled relaxation.
Best wishes,
Happygal Jan (Certified Massage Therapist)
