Tendonitis and Fluoroquinolones

Dear Dr. Stoll,
You stated to a person posting about Tendonitis and Levaquin that they probably had some underlying condition and it would have happened anyway? I did not understand what type underlying condition you meant? Many sustain such injuries from this class of medication. The person stated they took Levaquin and on Day 4 developed their problems,in FDA reports over 300 tendon related injuries including ruptures were reported through September 2001 for that drug alone. New warnings have been added regarding concomitant steroid use increasing such risks on this drug.
I felt the websites below may be helpful to you and others who sustain these type of problems during or after use of fluoroquinolones. Southern Medical Journal reports cases of tendon rupture 6 months after use of fluoroquinolones. These outcomes occur to those who are sedentary as well as active. The Mechanisms are poorly understood.

Thanks, Jean.

My point was: Since the vast minority of people who use these drugs actually get this condition, there MUST be other contributing causes. The most common contributing cause is chronic bracing (see the glossary and the archives).

Since the person cannot go back and not take the drug, their only option is to get rid of the other causes that CAN be changed.

Hope this helps.

Walt
