Tennis Elbow/Epicondilitis/Tendonitis

Posted by Michael on October 07, 2003 at 10:34:23:

Hello Dr. Stoll,

I've been afflicted with tendonitis right on the bony knob on the outer side of my elbow for two and an half years. The original injury was caused while assisting another person with carrying a large heavy box, they dropped their end forcing a sharp downward motion of my hand and immediate pain and burning in my elbow. The injury has subsequently been aggravated by playing tennis which I have stopped many months ago to try to get this healed to no avail. I've been through the routine of a variety of anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, long periods of rest and inactivity, and over the last eighteen months, three cortisone shots at six month intervals. The most recent shot in March '03 which had no improveing effect at all. All treatments have not had any permanent relief.

Recently in discussions with acquaintances, I've been told about DMSO and it's benefits. After doing what I think is a pretty thorough search of the numerous DMSO web sites I purchased a couple of containers of 100% DMSO /99% pure. The problem I have is these containers did not come with instructions on it's use. I cannot locate instructions on how to use this product in the numerous DMSO web sites. I'm looking for information on how to apply, how much to apply, how often to use it, and some general idea of when I may expect some improvement if this is going to improve. Can you help with these questions?

Hi Michael,

I've seen books about DSMO available -- try your library or Amazon.com.

Have you tried massage or stretching to relieve the tension on the tendon?

Best wishes,
Happygal

Hi, Michael.

Listen to Happygal.

Your original injury did not heal probably because of the additional factors you were not aware of before the injury: faulty tennis stroke technique (see an instructor), chronic bracing which almost everyone in this country has, common nutritional deficiencies, etc.

The best concentration of DMSO to use is 50% since more concentrated can cause skin irritation. It can be diluted with distilled water from 100% to 50%.

Then, apply 3 times a day and rub in well.

Use the search engine on this BB for microcurrents information as a last resort solution.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

Hello Happygal,
Yes, I've done many many months of stretching, massage, electro-stim, and ultrasound. No improvement. MRI shows no damage. I so sick and tired of dealing with this that now I'm delving into and researching the world of non-traditional remedys. Acupuncture may eventually be on that list of research.

Hello Dr. Stoll,

You are correct about the additional factors. In March I attended a "Tennis Camp", wearing my brace of course, and the first thing the instructor spotted was no follow through. As per previous instructors, this was not a problem prior to the origial injury. Apparently it was something I didn't realise I developed as a response to the elbow pain. Catch 22. So unfortunately, I've stopped playing tennis until I can get the elbow completely healed. I'll let you know how I do and thanks for the suggestion about "Microcurrents?" Hmmmmm

Mike

Hi Michael,

Keep looking! You'll find something eventually, no doubt.
