Hi guys,
I just wanted to let those of you dealing with tinea versicolor know that diflucan, used in conjunctin with selenium for a few days, works extremely well for me, and that I recommend that you all try it. Wtih as little as 100mg once a day, my scales started to dissapear by day 3.
Here's a little about my situation. When I was in high school 6 or 7 years ago, I was at a waterpark with a friend during the summer and he pointed out, "you have these spots on your stomach." i looked down and sure enough, i had a few faint spots. I went to my primary care physician; he prescribed selenium sulfide 2.5% for 15mins a day for a week. in like 4 days, the spots were gone. when it came back a year later, it's stuck with me since.
In the past 6 years, the tinea versicolor has spread pretty much everywhere: back, chest, and now, depressinly, my throat and neck- visible for all. I have tried everything, selenium for hours, nizoral lotion and oral, and even "special" creams with 9 agents that I had to get from a compounding pharmacy. in total, I visited about 5 primary care physicians and 3 dematologists- thank god I have great insurance. I was getting very depressed, because according to web literature, tinea versicolor is easily treated; it just comes back quickly. yet, I had no way of dealing with it. then, a doctor tried diflucan with me.
today, I still have tinea versicolor, and it's pretty bad, but i go to the gym everyday and I think that's the main reason I have it- from the sweating. obviously, i can't take diflucan all the time, because of the damage that it wuld do to my liver, but I know that if it gets really bad, I can always take diflucan, which I do, about 5 pills every 3 months. my problem is that the diflucan comes back extrmeley quickly when I work out.
Lastly, the medical community is divided on the issuse as whether tinea versicolor is contagious or not. Although, Dr. Walt Stoll believes that it is contagious, from what my medical professionals have told me, I don tthink it is. They have told me that the fungus that causes the scales, and the yeast the it feeds on, is present on the skin all normal people. for those of us suffering from tinea versicolor, we just have a much higher amount of the fungus and the yeast. therefore, since we all have it on us anyway, no one is going to get "contaminated" by sleeping on my sheets. for those reasons, do not change my sheets every day. however, if any of you believe in the sheet changing, and other stuff like the wellness regimne, then I would love to hear your testimonials. As for me, i believe that the most important factor in my case has been sweat and sunlight(which makes the spots pronounced).
cheers and goodluck to all

Thanks, Anonymous.
If only your original physician had bothered to tell you that you had to treat this for at least a month to cure it AND what increased your susceptibility to it, so you could prevent recurrence, your life history would have been much different.
I do not think that TV is very contagious. It is only those who do not buff off their dead skin when washing and drying who can catch it from others. See the archives.
For the record, I do not think that changing the sheets makes much difference. Since ALL chronic infestations are a relationship between amount of exposure and the person's immunity, I suppose it might make a little difference.

After you dry off after a shower, you might want to use cornstarch.
My husband had a rash & I looked up in one of my books & they said to use cornstarch. He did & it worked. He also worked out at the gym alot & I think what he had was "prickly heat" ... don't know if it is what you have or not, but that cornstarch was amazing.
