Tinea Versicolor

I too have been reading the articles about Tinea versicolor. When I went to the doctor, she prescribed the Nizoral shampoo, and also told me to take GEN NIZORAL tablets (200MG) for a week. On Monday, Dec. 9, will be exactly one month after starting my treatment. First I want to know, is or was my health in any danger from taking the Nizoral tablets. Second, I've used the Nizoral shampoo twice in the 3 week period, is that overdoing the treatment? Third, what do you all mean when you all say that I need to buff my skin during the shower and when I dry off?
I've had TV for many, many years and just started treating it. My mom and I always thought that it was a simple skin discoloration that I inherited from my father. TV is basically all over my back. So my last question is, because I've had it for so many years, does that mean it will be harder to treat?
PLEASE REPLY AT YOUR EARLIEST CONVENIENCE!!! I'm eager to know the response!!!!

Hi, Chelsea.

The reason bathing cloths have traditionally been made of terry cloth is so the dead skin could be buffed off during the washing and drying process. Some of the towel manufacturers have forgoten that and so have been producing velveteen washcloths and towels. We can expect the incidence of TV to increase for those who use them thinking they are being "gentle" to their sensitive skin!

Only by your reading the package insert or the PDR descriptions of oral nizoral can you appreciate any risk you have been exposed to. So far as I know, even daily topical Nizoral is pretty safe.

Remember, the buffing is a preventive of recurrance and not a treatment of what you currently have.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
