A few NEW Tinea Questions... (e.g. How about Booze?)

Posted by Jon on April 20, 2003 at 02:05:33:

First off, thanks again for all of your help with treating my tinea versicolor Dr. Stoll. I've been showering, buffing, and applying Nizoral cream to my entire upper-body twice a day for almost a week now, I'm prepared to continue this for about a month, and I'm very hopeful that I will be able to tan again in about 4 weeks. However, I have a few questions that I was wondering about my tinea that I could not find in the archives (and if they're there, then I'm sorry to waste your time.)

1. Does it make a difference to buff my skin DURING my shower, instead of afterwards? By "buff", do you mean to rub a towel roughly over the skin?

2. I am also using Tea-Tree Oil soap in the shower, and drinking Pau D'arco Tea every day (both have strong ant-fungal properties). Is this ok, or will it interfere with my nizoral treatment?

3. Will stress make my tinea worse? (it's exam time, so I'm slightly stressed out!)

4. Will drinking alcohol (not beer - I know that's bad for it because of all the yeast and sugar - but hard liqour or champagne) affect the tinea or my treatment?

5. I wear different clothes everyday (which is tough for a freshman at university!), but do I have to change my sheets every night as well?

6. I've noticed a lot of "success stories" for Selsun, but few for Nizoral cream... Is the Nizoral cream just as effective? Is there any way to tell if it's working, other than to wait it out?

**7. Is there any particular reason why you switched the recommended treatment for Tinea from Selsun Blue to Nizoral cream?

Thanks a lot for your help in this matter Dr. Stoll, it is GREATLY appreciated! Summer's coming, and my landscaping job calls for a good tan! (my girlfriend wouldn't mind one either! haha) Again, THANK YOU! You've already succeeded where other doctors have failed.

Thanks, Jon.

In order:
1. This does not have to be vigorous buffing although when you are behind it probably helps. Just so the washcloth hits every square inch of your body during the shower and the bath towel reaches every square inch during drying.
2. They will not interfere.
3. Probably.
4. Alcohol is the most refined kind of carbohydrate.
5. I would consider doing that for a month and using the hot cycle and the hottest dryer setting.
6. Both work. The Selsun is messier and I have recommended it for far longer--so a lot more people would have testimonials on this BB. More people have hypersensitive reactions to the Selsun than to the Nizoral. I do not think either works "better".
7. Ibid.

Walt
