Dr. Stoll - I'm terrified of what this Tinea's going to do to me....

Posted by Jon on May 05, 2003 at 00:57:31:

Hello Dr. Stoll

I'm having a nightmare with Tinea versicolor... I discovered, around a month ago, that my tinea versicolor still existed on my body after treatment with ketoconazole pills and then lasmisil spray later on. In fact, the Tinea had spread a grea deal. So, for the past 3 weeks, I have been eating a no-sugar low-carb diet, drinking pau d'arco tea, having acidopholus and garlic, buffing after my showers twice a day, and applying a great deal of Nizoral topical cream to my body. Now, it's almost time to start work at my landscaping job (about 2 weeks from now), and I'm terrified to see whether this treatment has worked. I'm already using one tube of 30g Nizoral PER DAY, because the Tinea is everywhere - From my buttox, all the way to my face - which takes a LOT of cream to cover twice a day. However, I have just discovered MORE tinea that I had not noticed before, and have not been applying cream to - on my lower legs, under my arms, and on my forehead. Since I'm already spending a combined 2 HOURS a day to slowly apply this Nizoral cream to my entire body each morning and night, I feel that with this discovery or MORE tinea, the topical-cream treatment may not work - there's simply too much Tinea, not enough time in the day to buff and apply, and not enough cash left in the bank account to pay for a tube of Nizoral a day. Is there an oral medication that is not very dangerous that will help me out? I have already tried the Selsun 2.5% and it caused hypersensitivity. Would th 1% possibly work for me, or would the lower concentration of selenium stil hurt me? Is there any way to see if the tinea I've been treating for the past 3 weeks is gone, other than tanning it? Perhaps having a warm shower or a sauna to see if red-spots appear? PLEASE Dr. Stoll, I'm a university student who would not like to look all spotted and "odd" this summer - I'm terrified of what my friends and my girlfriend will see when they look at me! I mean, this stuff is EVERYWHERE!!! I NEED to get this cured, and I have already spent so much time and effort, and missed out on lots of activities with my friends, family and girlfriend (e.g beers, smoking marijuana, eating most foods, going out in the sun, etc.). I also have excessive sweating when physical activity or warmth is present, which makes things difficult. SO, should I keep up the Nizoral treatment and hope that the new spots I discovered are not very affected? Should I take oral medication? Dye my skin? AHHHHHHH, this thing is consuming my life now, and I've been trying to kill it for a month! It's very frustrating, and I'm worried it will soon be destroying my life - a VERY dark tan is inevitable during landscaping. Is there any way to kill this damn thing?!?!?!?!?!? I'm terrified of what I might look like in a month....

Thanks for any help
-Jon

One month is barely long enough for any of this to work, much less three weeks! It took me about 6 or 7 months to finally get all the spots off, even though I think the fungus was dead before that. I did it mostly with diet and SR, though I did use some sort of shampoo that the dermatolgist presecribed. I tried selsun later on, but was sensitive to it. But really, the diet and SR did most of the good against this for me.

You are making this into a WAY bigger problem than it really is. If your girlfriend and friends are so superficial that they let something like this come between you, then I wouldn't worry too much about losing them. My boyfriend at the time helped me to put the shampoo on my back. I did not buff any more than usual while drying off - my skin is too sensitive...you might be damaging your skin and making it even more susceptible.

There is no way you should be using that much creme or taking so long to apply it. Maybe you're putting it on too thick.

I think your stressing about it is keeping your body on high alert (fight or flight), which is really what's causing this to begin with. You need to learn to do SR (I know, it sounds like a broken record) and keep your diet clean. You need to change how your body works in order to lower your susceptibility to this. This takes time. Keep reading here on this website about "how to be healthy" (articles on health section), immunity and stress. The more you understand the more likely you will be to get rid of this fairly soon.

Hang in there, and calm down!

Jon...I have had this problem for over 30 yrs. I get rid of it for about 3-4 yrs and then it comes back. The nizoral tablets (21 days supply) is what I used to get rid of it. They are hard on your liver, though, I guess. The dr.s always want to do liver tests when i get these pills. After taking the Rx, I get a tan that covers up the spots. It is not a cure, just a temporary cover-up. The spots look bad but I have learned to live with them and I also get my boyfriend to apply lotion to my back. I am using a product called Miracle II this time and will let you know if it works. I'm too old to worry about small stuff anymore. Good Luck.

Hi, Jon.

It will take at least a year for your pigment cells to recover from a good case of TV. So I guess that, for this year, your worst fears are going to be realized.

Buffing does little for curing a case of TV and a lot for preventing it happening again.

Improving your wellness sufficiently for your immunity to help prevent and to cure will take about a year. See the glossary, home page and archihves about wellness that will point the right direction. The side effects of the wellness will have you thanking the TV for forcing you to do it.

Listen to Lilo, Labrat and NJ.

Are you certain that this is not vitilego?

Walt
