Redness on neck

Posted by John on May 27, 2003 at 13:52:08:

Hello Dr.Stoll,
Well now that summer is almost here i have realized that the tv is back in full effect. The back and sides of my neck are pretty red almost pink in color and have plenty of white spots too. Looks just like a blotchy mess. I went to the doctors and he suggested I start using this nizoral 1% that I had lying around but he gave me a prescription for some lotion that is supposed to get the red out. I wasnt too sure about this because anything I put on my neck irritates me. I dont have the prescrition in front of me but do you have any idea of what he is trying to use. I mean if it would help get the red out I would do it but if it would only make me more red than forget about it.???? One more thing my skin on the neck is starting to feel like the post below leathery. What the heck is that all about. Thanks very much, John

Hi, John.

My guess is that since melanin is supposed to protect the skin from sun exposure that this is not happening any more.

That will make your skin excessively sensitive to damage from the sun's radiation.

A stetson (or any broad brimmed hat) whenever you are outdoors, as well as a shirt with a high collar, would probably help.

This appearance does not necessarily mean that the TV is back. During this stage of radiation damage your skin can become hypersensitive to ANYTHING (even bath soap or laundry detergent in your clothes) applied to the area.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Be of good cheer, John.

Only a couple of years if you protect the area as described.

Then the skin will have recovered it's normal resistance to sunlight. However, if you overdo it after that you can easily reset the skin to it's current setting so be reasonable.

Walt
