What exactly do the first stages of a nail fungus infection look like.
Can it affect the skin around the nail as well after it has set into the
nail? I swear I have a fungus infection in my finger nail but a
dermatologist I went to said no. Could he be wrong?

You can always try the vinegar treatment. Won't hurt you and it is cheap too.

Hi, Not.
Probably your doc is right. This is more likely an allergy OR even psoriasis. I would have to see and feel it to have any better idea.
Did your doc tell you what it might be or only what it is likely not?

The doctor took a sample from under the nail and put it in a culture
for a couple months to see if it was fungus - then said results were
negative and that it was NOT a fungus. However, I was treating my
nail with a fungus medication at the time and wonder if that's why it
didn't show up.
Dr. Stoll, I've had this for over a year now and have tried everything
to get rid of it. The pinky nail started lifting from the nail bed and
has spread half way down my nail. The nail bed looks a little red
under the nail and has some circular grooves in the nail itself. It
will sometimes get better and other times get worse. The skin
around the nail wasn't affected at first, but then started getting
these little blister looking things and the skin seems "puffy"
compared to my other finger.
Please, any help or idea of what's going on is appreciated. Also, if
you know of a good doctor that I can see for this please let me
know... I live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Thank you, Dr. Stoll, for any help.

yes, I've started the vinegar treatment just in case. Should I
reapply the vinegar every time I wash my hands?

Hi, Not.
Did you advise your doc (the one who took the culture) that you were already treating this condition? These kind of cultures are notoriously hard to do. If they are positive it is significant but if they are negative it does not mean much. ANY treatment at the time would guarantee a negative result!
Normally, onychomycosis does not affect the surrounding skin.

Hi, Not.
Not unless you wash your hands within a few minutes if application.

Yes, I did tell the Dr. I was using an anti-fungal cream at the time. What's the best way, Dr. Stoll, to diagnose if this is fungus infection or not? Thank you for your time.

I don't believe you have a fungus because it doen't sound like it at all I have one in my nails and that doesn't sound like mine. I can't believe the doctor didn't tell you how to treat whatever you have, sometimes I think that some doctors dont understand how us patients feel and if we didn't want to get well with whatever we had we would not be seeing him in the first place.

Hi, Not.
In my opinion, this doc totally wasted this test!
Listen to Connie. A piece of nail sent to the lab for biopsy might confirm a diagnosis.

Hi Connie,
What does yours look like in your nails exactly? I think I might be having a couple things going on.... fungus in my fingernail and irritation of the skin around the nail because of the fungus - like a contact dermatitis. The reason I feel it's fungus in my fingernail is because I have it in a couple toenails. I didn't know and used the same file that I use on my toes on my fingernails. After about a week I started noticing changes in a couple fingers. I've had the fungus in my toenails, though, for years and can't remember what it first looked like when I got it.
It is EXTREMELY frustrating that the doctors I've seen each tell me something different and nothing they prescribe works. I'm totally frustrated.

Thanks, Not.
The cracks around the nails go deep (all the way to the bone) and are among the most difficult (if not the MOST difficult) places to get topical chemicals out of. This is why these areas are among the most common places for environmental chemicals to first show reactions.
Comments?

Thanks, Dr. Stoll. However, this started first in the nail and then over a period of months the skin around the nail started to get irritated. Then, to make things worse, doctors kept prescribing different kinds of steroid based creams, which i think made the skin even worse. A while ago I posted my concerns on this board and you replied and said to start taking Omega 3 fish oil. I did and the skin around the nail is a lot better and getting better every day. My skin as a whole just feels better also. However, the nail will get better than worse again. I'm no doctor, but from what I do know I think I have fungus in the nail and the skin around it became sensitive because of the fungus. I just wish there were a test to tell me 100% if this is fungus or not. Just in case I've started the vinegar.
