tinea versicolor/pityriasis versicolor

Hi Dr Stoll and Bulletin Board

I have had this condition for the past 13 years.

The first doctor I went to thirteen years ago gave me a diagnosis of "fungal infection, very common, no treatment", and that I was imagining it was more unsightly than it was (what!!!).

His colleague, a year later, diagnosed tinea versicolor and prescribed OTC Selsun every night, overnight (basically to use it for a couple of weeks after the tinea had disappeared). Selsun stank even after being washed off and five years later the tinea was still there.

Third doctor prescribed Sporanox (tablets/capsules), twice in two years (both times during the summer when obviously tinea versicolour more noticeable therefore enabling easier diagnosis) - great until I read the side effects and took myself off it (Sporanox worked but the tinea came back the next year).

13 years of suffering "unsightly skin" and 10 years after the last doctor's visit, and on a friend's recommendation, I have just started using Canestan cream on the affected areas. I am living in Hong Kong, it is hot and humid but still the tinea has gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Used it everyday for three weeks now - am laughing - the white bits will gradually get tanned I am sure but no new red patches. Those low cut tops (front and back) are out of the wardrobe.

One last thing, I was free of tinea during my pregnancy, with no medication!!! But, I had no sodas, no cigarettes, no alcohol, no caffeine, no soft cheese. Jeez, guess I should learn something from that.

PS Does long term use of Canestan cream have any side effects???

Thanks so much.

Pamela

Thank YOU, Pamela!

What is Canestan? What does it have in it and is it available anywhere other than Hong Kong?

Anythign that is THAT effective needs to be in this country as well (in spite of the AMA's insistance that we already know all there is to know).

Dr Stoll

Canestan cream contains 0.2g clotrimazole and is used to treat athlete's foot, paronychias, mycoses in skin folds, candida vulvitis, candida balanitis, pityriasis versicolor and erythrasma. Thought it was available worldwide - certainly available in the Europe as well as Hong Kong.

Cheers

Pamela

Thanks, Pam.

Cltrimazole IS available by several names in this country. I had not heard it called Canestan before, though.

Most people do not get as good results as you have mentioned. Congratulations! It IS one of the many remedies to try.

MOST tinea versicolor (notable by being the most superficial of all fungal infections of the skin), that is hard to resolve, is related to the reduced general level of immunological reserves the individual has. It needs to be considered a gentle warning to begin something like wellness to restore immunological reserves.

Namaste`

Walt

I have tinea versicolor and just found out I am pregnant. I tried Selsun Blue at home but it irritated my skin. The dermatologist prescribed Nizoral shampoo every day for 2 weeks, then once a week thereafter. He also prescribed an oral pill, but my ob-gyn said not to take it. My spots are pretty small but flaky and the Nizoral doesn't seem to make them less flaky. They are on my back, chest, arms and a few on my legs. What can I do? I hate this stuff. I am eating very healthy now and have been for several months.
I tried to look through your archives, but I could not find your "prescription" for this stuff!

Hi, Wendy.

Your healthy eating will benefit your pregnancy so it is a good thing for you to do.

I think you are going to have to bear with this until you are no longer pregnant. THEN go after it with a vengence between pregnancies.
