Hi,
I have read all of the archived posts on tinea versicolor. The most effective treatment seems to be Selsun Blue shampoo applications. However, my skin is so sensitive that I can't even use it for one day let alone 4 weeks. My sking tuens red and intensely painful. It is so frustrating to have this chronic condition and to find nothing to even give me temporary relief. I truly believe that I have tried everything on the market for this condition over the past seven years. Recently I tried the Lamisil spray, and I used it for almost 8 weeks, morning and night...my skin has become very dry and peeling, but guess what...the tinea versicolor is still there. I'm going absolutely crazy with this stuff...I have become depressed and feel like nothing will ever give me any relief. On top of that, it has covered an increasingly larger area of skin over the years, so not only has it not improved, but it has gotten progressively worse. I don't know what else to do. I have tried every prescription and over the counter treatment available...does anyone have anything to recommend that could give me some hope of even a temporary cure for this tenacious skin disorder. Thank you so much for any advice.

read up on EVERYthing in the archives. STart with Chronic bracing, LGS, candida - hopefully, you will begin to see the bigger picture about WHY you hve this problem, then you will be able to get rid ofit.
I had it once and even tthough I reacted to the selsun and couldn't use it, the tinea went away as I continued to get a handle on my yeast and other problems...you can do it, but it takes time and dedecation.
hopefully this helps you.

Thank you for your reply...I will read any and everything I can if it will give me the slightest edge on how to control this awful rash. What exactly does wellness entail, and is it outlined anywhere on this site, or is there a book, etc.? Thanks so much for your help.

it's in the upper right corner of the bulletin board. YOu can read about wellness there and also the glossary and archives on this site will lead you to discussions about all of these issues - they are all connected and the more you read, the more sense it will make to you.
In the mean time, don't worry so much about your "condition" it won't kill you and you will be able to help yourself!
Good luck.

Hi, Belle.
It is true that there is about 25% of people who are hypersensitive to Selsun Blue. They cannot use it and the only reason that is first on MY list is not that it is more effective but that it is the cheapest, effective treatment.
Be sure you remember about the buffing of the dead skin after every shower. See the note about pregnancy and tinea today.

Hi Walt,
Thank you for your reply. I had never known that buffing away the dead skin thoroughly would be helpful...no doctor has ever mentioned this to me. And as easily as this stuff seems to spread, I am always on pins and needles about scrubbing it to hard or anything that could cause it to take over more of my "healthy" skin. Thank you for your insight...I will truly do anything to get rid of this awful skin condition.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I know this is not a life threatening disorder, but after many years of itching and seeing the disfiguring colorations all over my back, and now even on my neck, with seemingly no end in sight, it has taken a definte toll on my mental condition. I feel like I will never get rid of this problem, and not only that, but that it will take over even more of my skin the more years that go by. I just feel on edge all the time, and panic every time I see something new on my skin that looks like the beginning of yet another patch of this versicolor. Sorry for rambling...I just feel so frustrated about not being able to get any relief for these symptoms. Thanks again for responding to my questions, and have a good day!

Hi there,
If you've read all the archives maybe this will be
redundant but, I'll post this anyway. I get tinea every
once in a while, and I can feel it coming on even when I
can't see the spots. My skin will start to burn very
slightly, and then start to itch a little. That's when I know
I'm getting it.
The last time I had it I took Nizoral two tablets a day for
a few days, then one tablet a day for a few days. I also
used the selsun shampoo but I found that putting it on
my skin and leaving it there (twice a day) was too
intense-redness and burning. I instead used it in the
shower as a soap and washed it off. It didn't bother me
at all to use it that way. The tinea is gone for now but I
still use the selsun shampoo just in case-once a week
or two. Also I found out on this site about washing
bedding more often, not using bath towels or clothing
more than once before washing them because the
tinea is everywhere. Use very hot water when washing.
The wellness program is really important, but that is the
long term solution-it didn't help my immediate concerns
and although it's been mentioned that Nizoral is too
intense and unnecessary for tinea, I was desperate.
Besides I felt I was solving two problems with the
Nizoral by killing the candida I believed I had.
I hope this helps. I empathise with your frustration. It
feels awful to have tinea, and it's visually unappealing,
even tho it won't kill you. It's a constant irritant that
wears you down.
Good luck
Lauri

Hi Lauri,
Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. It truly is a relentless, and very irritating thing to have. It is so frustrating to have to constantly be treating something like this, with no long term results whatsoever. I know what you said about the Nizoral being a strong alternative treatment, but like you, I am feeling very desperate to get some relief from this, so I am going to talk to my Dr. about that route. Do you have any idea what the test for the liver entails that I have seen mentioned? Apparently one of the potential side effects of the oral medication involves the liver? Thank you again, Lauri, for all of your advice....have a good weekend...

Oh, yeah...I'm certain it is tinea...I've had it diagnosed by my regular home doctor, as well as two dermatologists over the years...I've even had it examined under light and the scope...apparently it is unmistakeable because of the shapes or something to that affect. From what I hear, it is not itchy in all cases...I'm just lucky I guess!! Thanks again for all of your advice.

Hi, Belle.
It doesn't take "scrubbing it hard" to prevent the problem and help with treatment; just terrycloth buffing while drying every time.
Did you see the note about some doc knowing enough to suggest a loofah?
