Tinea Versicolor Spots/Tanning

Posted by Marci on July 24, 2001 at 04:20:13:

Hey Dr. Stoll,

I've been using the Spectazole 1% Cream on my TV and it seems to be doing the trick. I've been really anxious to finally get rid of these spots which I have been trying to hide with clothing. I asked my doctor when these spots will tan and he said "by next summer"..thats not soon enough! I have read that it takes 4 weeks for the TV to be completely gone so does that mean, in 4 weeks the spots on my skin will tan?

Thanks, Marci

Hello Marci,

I had tinea versicolor earlier this summer, key word, HAD : ) I used selsun blue, the 1% every night and buffed my skin with a towel as Dr. Stoll and others have suggested. It did take about a month or so before I noticed the spots had stopped spreading and I had been in the sun, they were tanning over. I can tell you they will tan over as you are doing your regimen but, for them to become completely tan, it will take about a month or so, at least that is how it was with me. The most important thing to do is buff the skin after you get out of the shower/bath with a towel, use a new towel each time and then apply your topical treatment overnight, rinse off the next morning and use a light moisturizer. I would also pay close attention to my diet, cut the sugar, white flour, rice, white pasta, anything that will convert to sugar in the body and read up on candida and LGS on the board here, it made a big difference for me. When I first got it last year, it was not bad and the doc then told me that it would take 16 months IF I used the Nizoral pills and followed thier protocol. I NEVER took the pills, over the winter it was probably still there but less noticeable. When spring hit and I tanned, there they were, worse than last year and they spread at first. All I did was the buffing and the selsun, tan, and now, they are gone. Stick with it and don't miss a day, watch your diet and stress and you should be able to wear the summer clothes soon : ) I wish you the best of luck.

I got two spots of TV on my upper arm in November. I started bathing with nizoral shampoo and buffing my arms with terry cloth. I had kenazola ( I can't spell it) from my Dr. and put it on every day after I showered. I didn't cut out sugar from my diet, just reduced the amount a bit. The spots never spread and I believe it is not active anymore. However the spots are still there. I don't tan well because I don't go out in the sun much, I have fair skin. Where these spots are my shirts always cover them. I've been told it could take a year before my skin re-grows over these spots. It is a bit annoying.
