tinea versicolor

I have tinea versicolor and do not know what to treat it with! I have heard all about Selsun Blue! Should I use the Selsun Blue and how often? Should I also use some cream with it? I am 23 years old! I live in Florida! I only have it on my upper arms and a couple on my back!

Thank you-
Jacki

Jackie, sounds like you found some information on tinea. Was it from scrolling down the bulletin board? You can get all your answers I think by reading the archives. Put tinea in the search box above.

Hello Jacki,

I had tinea versicolor earlier this year, started in the spring and got really nasty by early summer, to the point where I could not wear anything the showed my stomach, arms or back. I read the archives and also posted a question, this is the information I followed and it worked, no more white spots : ) You have to use the Selsun Blue EVERY day for four weeks. After you bathe or shower, buff your skin with a towel while it is still damp, this gets the dead skin off and allows for faster healing of the tissue. After you do that, put the selsun anywhere you have the tinea and don't just spot treat, get it all over the area to prevent new spots from forming that you may not see yet. Leave it on overnight, yes it is a bit messy but wear an old shirt and make sure you wear a new one each night and never use the same towel two times in a row. Also, I followed a no sugar, low carb diet, meaning no white flour products or rice, which convert to sugar in the body. I ate mostly veggies and some fruit but maybe just one piece a day, also lean protein. This seemed to speed up the recover for me, I don't know how it works in everyone but it certainly can't hurt you. After about 2-3 weeks, I noticed the spots were less and had started tanning over. All in all took about 6 weeks for them to be gone and tanned over but it takes 4 weeks for the skin to renew itself completely. Stick with this program and you should see the results. I wish you the best of luck : )

I had what I believe to be this same condition as a teen and young adult. I tried all the shampoos and other suggestions without long lasting relief. Every summer it got bad. What worked best for me was simply using an over the counter antifungal cream. Just put it on (whenever, but I usually did it after a bath before bed) and you should notice an improvment soon. I had areas of darkened skin around my underarms and a little on my neck. I'd just put on the creme and a cotton shirt before bed and when i got up I noticed improvment. I can just tell you what worked for me. I hope it works for you too.
