I have had this condition 2 times so far. Once about 10 years ago, and recently this summer. I only seem to get this whenever I decide to go to a tanning bed place. Every time I tan this happens. I've went to the doctor and have been prescribed a cream (clotrimazole) The first time it went away. This time I dont think I used it long enough, and it came back worse than ever. It's on my back, so I really hadn't noticed how bad it was until my kids remarked how gross my back was during swimming. I'm back to using the cream again, but would like to know, once it's gone this time, how to prevent it from coming back (without having to avoid the tanning beds) Should I be cleaning the beds myself before getting in them to assure they are good and clean. Is this really what's causing it (or where I'm catching it from) I've came to the "tanning bed" conclusion myself since this seems to be when I get it. Does the Selsum Blue really work? Help

Most people will say it isn't contagious, but mine only appeared after a visit to a tanning salon too!!! Plus I had been going to the gym a lot, and I have read last night where it can be caught from vinyl weights benches. Who really knows, but I have my suspicions about those tanning salons!!!

Hi, Dodger (and Emma).
With NO tan, this condition is almost invisable and has no other symptoms since it is SO superficial. The archives explains why the condition prevents tanning in the effected spots.
The tanning booth is suspected because of this, NOT because it causes the condition in any way.
So far as I know, WHAT you use to cure it is much less important than HOW you use it and how you prevent it.
Hope this helps.
Walt

I was already quite tanned when I visited the tanning salon and it hadn't showed up until then. As I mentioned, other factors for me could be going to the gym and lots of sweat, being pregnant and also having a husband with TV

Hi There! I was wondering if you think it could be pregnancy related? I am pregnant and contracted this fungal infection(red scaley blotches), starting on my chest and over a period of a couple of months has spread to different parts of my body.My doctor recommende a few different creams with no positive result so far.I started selsun skin treatment containing selenium sulfide 25mg/ml today and praying that this will work as i only have a few months left before the birth of my son and worry that i wont be able to breastfeed due to this infection. So could you please help me out with what treatment has workrd for you as i will give anything a go.
Thanx
Rach

Is yours definitely TV??? I haven't tried much, but am looking at the selsun as a first step. I have read a lot where fungal infections are more common and more aggressive in pregnancy (hormonal changes and reduced immunity) plus I was going to the gym lots ie buildup of sweat plus ?copntagious from equipment.
Feel free to e-mail me if you want to chat further.

Hi, Rachael -
There is a post from Wendy in the archives (link below) who had tinea versicolor and was pregnant. Walt recommended that she wait until she had her baby before doing anything other than practicing wellness.
Did a dermatologist give you this diagnosis? If so, the other archives on the subject will help too. Raisa

I agree. I wondered if the tanning beds had anything to do with it too. I am always normally tan because I have Indian in me. So I stay tan year round, but I was going to take a cruise & didn't want to get burned down there, so thought I would get a little darker first by tanning. It's the only time I ever seem to get it. That made me think it had something to do with the tanning beds. I can lay out by the pool & never have a problem. Have you tried the Selsum Blue therapy and if so, did it work? I've been trying the medication prescribed for about 1 month, and no changes yet.
Thanks for your reply.
