Quick question regarding the homemade saline nasal wash:
When I "snort" the solution, it immediately goes into my throat, and then I spit it out. Isn't it supposed to go into my sinuses? Am I doing it right?
Would appreciate some quick advice. By the way, a friend of mine told me that she read that most surfers don't have allerges, and researchers think it is because they are always snorting all that salt water..... thought that was intersting.
Thanks!

they sinuses drain into the throat. I use an eyedropped and
try to get all around them by tilting and rolling my head
around. Spraying would probably be easier.
Just the salt air at a beach is said to help a lot of
things. Not sure about allergies since I believe that is a
reaction to an irritant but it probably would help most.

Hi, Rodney.
You are just washing your nasal passages.
There is a special technique for getting the saline into the sinuses. Most health food stores have books with pictures that explain this better than I can here.
Suffice it to say that to do it one has to lie on their back with their head directly upside-down, fill the nasal area with the saline and say "K", over and over, while holding the nose shut.
Remember that most sinus congestion and blockage is caused by bracing and TMJ.
Hope this helps. Let us know how you do.

I use a neti pot. You tilt your head to the side, fill up a tiny "Aladdin's Lamp" thing with warm water and 1/4 tsp of salt and 1/4 tsp of baking soda dissolved in it, pour it into one nostral and breathe through your mouth. The water will go through your sinuses (I think) and come out your other nostral, cleaning out the dust and pollen. Isn't that correct, Dr. Stoll? How does that compare with the "K" method?

Probably as well. IF one is being successful at getting water into the sinuses, water will intermittantly run out of the nose or down the throat for nearly an hour thereafter.

For me the water does not run down my throat or nose for an hour after using Neti Pot. So if it's not reaching the sinuses, where is it going, and is it doing any good?

Sorry for the misunderstanding. The water from the sinuses might trickle, intermittantly, for as long as an hour. Most of what trickles down the throat would be undetectable but many people will notice it out the front if they bend forward for a few minutes.
If it is not getting into the sinuses, it still will temporarily wash the surface, of the nasal lining, of allergens and debris.
