I recently saw a tmj dentist because my p.t. referred me. He diagnosed tmj problems and is advising the use of a splint for several months, after which we see how I do without it. He feels it may help my chronic neck and back problems. I have no tmj pain and only a slight clicking on the right side. This splint device is very expensive. Does anyone have any positive or negative experiences with tmj dentists/splints? Thanks!

Hi, Kim.
I use a bite splint for TMJ. Mine cost me about $175 and my regular dentist arranged the molds and had it made for me. It felt really strange at first, but I'm pretty used to it now and it does seem to help. Don't be surprised if occasionally you find the bite splint somewhere in your bedroom besides your mouth in the morning. My daughter just found mine in my bed somewhere today. Sometimes I just yank it out of there in my sleep!

Hi, Kim.
You probably will get some temporary relief of symptoms from the splint.
However, in the long run, the only thing that will resolve it, and the symptoms in your back and neck, is the regular use of SR.
Your clicking says that your TMJ is pretty severe and has been there for many years.
Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Thanks. This dentist charges $3,150! He says that includes all the follow-up visits, the splint, the computerized testing that they do beforehand, etc. Your price sounds much better!

Thanks, Walt, Do you think it's possible to be able to give the splint up if I can learn SR and get good at it over several months? I bet the dentist will say no to that!

This specialist wants three THOUSAND dollars for a splint? What is it, a diamond-studded model??? :-)
Go to the link below (www.nti-tss.com) for a relatively new type of splint that has been steadily gaining acceptance in the U.S. and abroad.
They have a list of dentists that provide it, or they'll send a free starter kit to your dentist.
Good luck!

Whoa.... Your dentist must live in Beverly Hills, Kim! I thought $175 was pricey!

Absolutely, Kim.
However that takes determination and discipline on your part! Become a student of SR and pay attention to whether yout teeth are touching 100 times a day. You till get some relief immediately and resolve the problem in the long run (6-12 months).
In my opinion, it is a real shame that dentists, who know this, will not explain it to their TMJ patients. Of course, there is not much money in THAT.
Let us know what you decide and how you do.
