removing teflon tmj implants

Posted by Eileen on February 15, 2003 at 11:22:55:

I have progressive bone loss from degenerative arthritis in the jaw joint which was helped by a teflon disc implant.
However the FDA recalled the implant, and in 2002, my implant became displaced, and a CT showed that the bone loss is 3 to 4 times greater than 16 years ago, when I had the implant. A bone is fragmented, there are 2 cysts in area by the brain, and the bone by the brain has small holes in it. A surgeon has said that I should have a osteotomy (removal of a granulate) and that a arthrotomy may be necessary to corrrect the bite, which will shift with the osteotomy.
Anybody got any suggestions or experiences that maybe will give me some enlightenment. The FDA and the doctors agree that this is disastrous.

Hi, Eileen.

If the ADA had not fought the very idea of TMJ so harshly 30 years ago (actually taking away the licenses of those dentists who figured it out first), perhaps this would not have progressed to such a disasterous end result!

Even now, it is too embarrassing for them to learn from the original pioneers and are insisting that all dentists learn about this complex condition from scratch. This will put off meaningful management for ANOTHER 20-30 years!

It sounds like only a total replacement of the joint can help you now. Eliminating bracing (see glossary and archives) of the masseter muscle, which was the cure for you 30 years ago, is perhaps the most helpful thing you can still do.

The ADA didn't learn a lesson from this though. They are foolishly fighting the overwhelming information about the dangers of amalgams even as we speak.

Perhaps glucosamine and omega 3s will still help you a little.

Let us know what you finally do and how much it helps.

Walt
