Hi, I am trying to find out why I have a persistent swelling around my jaw. At first, i thought it might be a parotid problem, but my ENT says my parotid gland is not blocked & it doesn't seem like a tumor. It's several days bfore I get the results from a CT scan, but I think it could be a TMJ problem. Are muscle swellings typical in TMJ? I am a constant gum chewer, could this have an effect on just the right side of my jaw, or is TMJ usually bilateral? I also don't have much pain at all, some twinges of pain & some ear pressure (no sign of infection),& neck muscle achiness.

check out tmj.com
or read
Dr. Shankland's book. His website is on the home page of this site and you can order his comprehensive book. Your answers will surely be there. This site, also, has some good information on TMJ. There's so much out there. Try relaxing too!

Hi, Phyl.
Listen to Rona (Thanks, Rona!)
Muscular hypertrophy with TMJ is almost a given. Only the degree is questionable. Getting rid of your bracing is really the only solution.
See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms.
Let us know how you do.
