TMJ and my son - what should I do now?

Posted by kmd on January 19, 2001 at 14:17:24:

My 10 year old son was diagnosed with TMJ when he was only 8. A year and a half ago he began seeing a specialist and a splint was made which he has worn every night while sleeping. The specialist says it is time to fit for a new splint (growing child) but this time my insurance denied the request completely. The splint costs $950 and when I heard that I got upset on the phone and spouted "$950 for that little piece of plastic?!!"

I'm going to do the appeals process with the insurance but if that fails I doubt I will fork out this outrageous fortune for a new splint. I would like to know what other options are out there. Seems to me there is a great TMJ book available that covers all the options but I don't know who wrote it or what it's called. Also believe a chiropractor can help manage the TMJ but is it enough?

He is so young to have TMJ and I will do what it takes to preserve his jaw function so he will not have a miserable adult life in pain. All ideas and help needed - and thanks.

kmd,
I found MSM to be very effective in managing the pain of TMJ. Years later, when being treated for another condition by a chiropractor who used a technique called TBM (Total Body Modification), my TMJ disappeared completely.Maybe this might work for your son? TBM referral line - 800-243-4826.

Hi, kmd.

Listen to Ed since that would cost a LOT less and would be helpful in many other ways as well. However, I have no experience with this solution to TMJ so I hope you would share what happens with the BB.

When I was in practice in Kenton, Ohio, I was the team physician for the football team. I got a dentist to work with me to produce, free, the first custom made mouth guards for high school students in Ohio (middle '60s).

SO I know, first hand, how much these mouth guards (identical to the football ones) should cost. After all the dentist made more than 50 of them for free for the school. He even made one for me to show how simple they were to make so that I would know what I was talking about when I proposed this to the school board.

The actual cost of materials is less than $10. The time it takes to make one is about an hour of a hygienist's time (including the impression).

SO, in MY opinion a fair price would be less than $100.
Take this for what it is worth.

Since SR is the final solution to TMJ, and the ideal age for practicing SR is the ages from 5-14, You might see if he would respond to the information in Deborah Rozman's book: "Meditating with Children".
