Vick's VapoRub Miracle!

Posted by YOWZA! on May 22, 2002 at 00:09:50:

I had been using the vinegar protocol for several months faithfully. The fungus grew out of my nail completely. After having a lovely pink nail bed for a few months, the fungus came back. I started the vinegar protocol again, but I started getting sick of applying it.

I read about the Vick's VapoRub protocol, and figured I would give it a try.

I did it for 3 days, and the fungus was gone! It didn't even need to grow out. I stopped for a few days to see if it would return. It did not. That was a few weeks ago, and it still has not returned.

Although the vinegar treatment is effective, I believe the VapoRub works better.

Hi YOWZA,

This sound really promising. Can you tell me how you applied the Vicks VapoRub ie. all over nail or just at base. Also, sparingly or liberally. Many thanks.

Maz

Hi Maz:

I applied the VapoRub with a cue tip all over my nail liberally.

Thanks

What about putting the vinegar in a spray bottle, keep in the shower. When your finished showering, spray liberally on all toes. Dry off, lightly spray again and then get dressed and let toes air dry. Main thing, vinegar has MANY uses, dandreff, balancing PH on skin in shower as well.

I don't think that would help getting rid of toenail fungus though.

The thing that doesn't make sense to me is that I thought you could only cure nail fungus by stopping the fungus where the nail grows at the cuticle and then letting time grow the bad part off. I can't imagine that anything can change the bad thick nail that is already there, into healthy pink nail.

I agree, kmd. It seems to me that the vinegar treatment arrested the fungus, but somehow some was left and that the Vick's stopped it in its tracks, which is good. But, it still remains to be proven as to whether the Vick's treatment can cure it if started when the nail bed is still infected with the fungus. Raisa

Congratulations & sorry, YOWZA.

I can easily suggest another cause for the different appearance, following the vicks application, since what you are suggesting is patently impossible.

First of all, vicks is in an oily base. Anyone who puts ANYTHING oily on a nail will notice that it looks more transparent almost immediately.

Since the nail tissue is already dead (Normally, the "healthiest" nail tissue is dead--just like your hair.) nothing could possibly work so fast (to cure nail fungus) other than for appearance.

I applied it to the thick stuff on the end of the raised nail....it seems to soften it enough, that it can be scraped out and makes it look a little better, at least.

Hello Dr. Stoll:

Thank you for your response. I agree with you that it seems impossible. But how can you account for the fact that it hasn't come back in three weeks. I shower every day, and I scrub the nail. Wouldn't the oil have been cleaned away by now?

I am hoping that it doesn't come back, but I will keep you posted.

Hello Raisa:

I agree with you. When I began the vinegar treatments, the nail bed was infected (the sides of the nail had lifted off of the bed, and the nail was thick and yellow).

Would the VapoRub have worked in that instance? I have no idea.

However, in this instance, it has worked. Granted, the nail still is overall healthy, and the fungus was very minor, and caught relatively early.

Perhaps people should use both?

Apply the vinegar, as per the regimen. Once the vinegar absorbs itself fully, apply the VapoRub and go about the business of your day.

What do any of you think?

YES-- I want to know the answer to this too! Do both Vinegar and Vick's?????

WHat about doing both the vinegar and the Vick's??? What Walt said about it ebign an oil scares me-- also to think that an oil would harbour the fungus since it is wet-ish.

ANYONE??

I don't see what harm it could do to use both.

Sarah `
Vicks cannot harbour a fungus itself. At least here in Australia (and I'd bet in the US too), Vicks ointment contains very potent active ingredients which are powerful anti-microbials -- menthol, camphor, eucalyptus oil, turpentine oil , cedarleaf oil, nutmeg oil and thymol. They won't necessarily put the lid on all bacteria or fungus, but they certainly are powerful against many.

I'm having the same experience using it against a small area of (presumably) fungus-affected nail as YOWZA -- with noticable change in 24 hrs. Like Walt, I wondered if the effect wasn't just the oil soaking into the nail. Time will tell if that's the case. But I look at it this way -- if the Vicks can "soak" the nail that fast and so thoroughly that no area of discolouration is any longer visible, I figure the Vicks and all its potent ingredients has gotten thru to the nail bed below, right where you want it to be.

Kath
