Nails getting worse using Vinegar and Vicks

Posted by Matt on July 25, 2002 at 09:44:08:

Hiya

I have been doing vinegar on my nails twice daily for about two weeks now, and after applying the vinegar around the base of the nail, I have been spreading vicks over the surface. Whilst initially this seemed to be really good, over the last few days, my nails have started to cloud over quite badly - I am hoping now that the whole nails arent becoming infected on nails where only 1/4 was...

I was also reading something about Toenail stress - aparrently a lot of jogging can cause your toenails to do this - The thing is, i have also started jogging every day.. I am wondering if this can cause it?

As posted before, I lead a pretty stressfull life, so I guess other factors could be a cause also..

Any help people can give here would be great... Oh, and I am a clean person - I shower after every run, and clean my feet well - I also have atheletes foot on the base of both feet - but not between the toes..

Matt

Personally, I wouldn't do the Vicks. I used the vinegar and that cured my toenail. I'm not saying that the vicks is causing it, but why don't you stop the vicks and just try the vinegar. You'll have to wait way more than two weeks to see a difference though. It takes a little longer than that to see new nail growth at the base of your nail and around 6 months to grow the complete infection out of your nail.

I would also use the vinegar treatment more often, and especially before you shower. THe nails can only absorb so much moisture, so using the vinegar after the shower probably has a limited effect.

So far the vinegar is working for me. I wish I had pictures (ick!)

Good luck!

I applied it everyday after a shower. Right after the shower I would clean the nail and trim it really well while it was soft and then put the vinegar all over my nail a couple of times. Whether or not this made a difference, I don't know, but it cleared it up anyway.

Hi, Matt.

One would think that, considering the natural tendency for humans to try to improve ANY healing protocol, that by now (after 4000+ years of natural healing protocols like this) something better would have emerged.

However, the stated vinegar protocol is still the best that has emerged.

The nails are getting cloudy from absorbing the oil from the Vicks. I do not think this will hurt anything although the oil might protect the root from the vinegar.

I have no experience with Vicks and the 4000+ years of experience of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine--where this came from) did not have Vicks to play with.

IF you come up with a better protocol, let us know. In the meantime, since it takes so long to work (because of how long it takes to grow out a new nail) you will likely be dedicatiing the rest of your life to prove one or the other of your improvements.

I am sure that we all appreciate your dedication if this is what you want to do with your life :o).

Namaste`

Walt
