Toe Nail Fungus and Shoes

Hi

I am currently under treatment for a toenail fungus (yes, it has been diagnosed). My question is: How often do I need to change my shoes out? I usually wear canvas tennis shoes and/or bedroom shoes. I have been changing them out once a month. Can I wash and/or bleach them? I don't want to re-infect myself...but neither do I want to just throw my money away. If washing/bleaching would kill the fungus, then I could use the shoes longer.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Di

Hi, Di.

Have you always used socks in these shoes? If so, do you change them every day?

I wear polish on my toes all the time....can this cause my toe nail to fall completely off. I was wondering what to do for this problem..and ask why did this happen? I was wondering if this can be caused by something lacking in my diet?

Thanks for letting me know. Connie Elliott

No socks...the tennis's are deck shoes.

The fungus originally started with toenail polish. I began getting little brown spots and didn't have enough sense to stop painting them. The fungus is only on my big toes...none of the other nails are infected.

At this point in my treatment, I am seeing new healthy nail growth, and I don't want to do anything to impede it. But new shoes once a month (while it won't break me) seems a waste of money...the shoes are hardly worn as I'm tossing them. That's why I asked about bleaching, since they are canvas, it would be easy to do. But the most important thing for me right now is to not get re-infected. I've had the fungus for over 6 years, and this is the first time healthy nails have appeared to be growing since the infection began.

Hi, Connie.

Probably nutritional but the polish doesn't help.

See the toenail fungus archives. I resolved this problem in myself, 30 years ago, by starting a whole foods diet.

Hi, Di.

Wearing sox whenever wearing shoes will save you all those shoes you have been throwing away.

This reminds me of the really rich guy who bought a new car whenever the windshield got dirty.

Would you wear sox for a month without washing them? Sox are washable whereas shoes not nearly so.

The shoes I have on right now, I have worn every day for more than 5 years. They smell the same as the day I bought them. They would have nothing to do with a fungus because I change my sox at least every other day and my foot wastes never touch the shoes.

Hope this helps.

Walt
