Hi Michele. I happened on Dr. Stoll’s Toenail and Foot Conditions Archives and find that you are the one I relate to the most. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with toenail fungus and the vinegar treatment. I have toenail fungus in all 10 toes and am going on 6/7 years of living with this infection. My big toenails are the worst. The others are not too bad, but they are still thick and yellow.
Prior to the infection, I never had any problems with my feet. I began exercising at a local gym, and I'm convinced that the cause of my toenail fungus was athlete’s foot left untreated. This was due to my own ignorance since I never had problems with my feet in the past. I showered barefooted at the gym on a regular basis and by the time I figured it out, it was too late. It was my husband who pointed out my athlete’s foot and beginning toenail fungus. I was also ignorant enough to think that the infections would clear on their own with R&R like some other infections I’ve had (duh me). Well, you live and you learn.
I tried tea tree oil but because of my sensitive skin, it caused inflammation within a few days. That’s not to say that it won’t work for anyone else. I started the vinegar treatment over a week ago and so far, so good. I’m really encouraged with this new discovery and will definitely stick with it. And Michele, the nail polish idea is great. Thanks again to you and to all the other people for sharing, and a big thank you to Dr. Stoll for this Bulletin Board. I'm a big fan of simplicity, and I no longer feel like I'm alone.

Hi Marci, I found this site a little over 3 months ago, and I also have a fungus in my finger nails and my toe nails. I have been using vinegar over 3 months now, and it is very slow in helping but I believe I can tell the differenct in my finger nails since they are growing out. I can not see it in the new growth although it was all the way to my nail base when I started using the vinegar. My toe nails doesn't look like they have grown any so I can't tell the differenct yet although they aren't getting worse. Dr Stoll says it takes a year to grow your toe nails back. So I figure my finger nails will grow back much faster. I was using tea tree oil on my toes first. I am thinking about going back to the tree tea oil on my feet since I am not alergic to it. I have heard it was better by some? I can't stand the ida of using it on my finger nails. It has a bad smell and I would not want to use it on my hands. I had heard that tree tea oil would cure it before I found out I had transfered it to my finger nails. Then I found this site and learned that vingar would cure it so now I am using it on my finger nails, boy am I glad I found out about the vinegar, because I would have really felt bad thinking I was going to put tree tea oil on my hands. I hope you have good results and please be careful if you can get it on your feet you can get it in your hands. I used the nail file on my feet that I used on my hands. I wish I had known what I know now, about fungus like this.

I too have had fungus infection in both of my "big toes" for years. I have used the vinegar treatment for about 16 months now. My left big toe is doing great and is no longer ingrown. I used to have to dig the ingrown nail out anf cried the whole time. Thank God, I have'nt had to do that in about 4 or 5 months now. The right big toe is a different story. The fungus is retreating and I gradually trim away the dead tissue & nail as it does. Problem is that the nail is not growing back. Soon I may have no nail at all on that foot. I have accepted that possibility and continue using the vinegar. I may just go get a false nail to wear when this is all over like someone suggested on this board. I have'nt (knock on wood) had any problem with my fingernails so far. I don't bite my fingernails and they are long so that may be the reason. I always douse them with vinegar though whenever I mess with my toenails. Good Luck with yours.

Having long finger nails does not keep you from getting the fungus in them, mine was long and I still got it in mine. I think if you use the same finger file or clippers you can get it from just that.

Hi Connie, thank you for your advice. Although I use separate nail clippers and files for my hands and feet, I'm very bad about disinfecting the "toe" tools when I'm done. I'm going to start doing this so the new growth does not get reinfected. I've also started using latex gloves when I manicure my toe nails. I bought a box of 5 pairs at Target for under $1.50, but what good will they be if I don't disinfect the tools.
Since you're not allergic to tea tree oil like I am, that might work for you too (though it does sound like the vinegar is beginning to work for your toes). I see a little bit of new growth on my toenails that I attribute to the tea tree oil I used on them before the skin irritation really became bad, and I had to stop. My guess is that I'll be seeing the results of the vinegar treatment soon enough. The toenails do take a long time to grow--a couple of months just to begin to see new growth I understand, but that's okay. I'm just glad that I haven't had any skin reactions to the vinegar.
Thank you for the good wishes, and good luck to you too!
