Black & blue toenail

Dr. Stoll - a couple of days ago I stubbed my big toe. Underneath the toenail is all black and blue (hematoma?) and the base of the nail is very sensitive. What can I do to relieve the pain and return the toenail to health?

hey alan....i've had this problem several times...i used to play football and had problems with my big toes - think because either i wasn't hitting the ball right or my boots were too small lol....

if the toenail is black and blue chances are that it will fall off...this may take some time, and will be a similar sensation to when a tooth just won't come out!!!....this happened to me 3 times...you will be left with a bed of skin underneath the toenail...

you will have a brand spanking new toenail within 4-6 months...

until then, you can relieve the pain by perhaps using ice....there may be some pressure there so if you can, allow the bad blood to seep out and keep it free from infection.

Hi, Alan.

Listen to Chris. Next time, while it is still throbbing, heat a paperclip red hot and touch the straightened out tip firmly to the area of blueness. It will pop through and relieve the pain almost instantly. One pop is sufficient.

Walt
