Hello. I have toenail fungus on my Big, second and pinkie toes of both feet. I have taken lamasil tablets for 3 months and have seen little difference, especially on the pinkie toes where I would assume I would notice a change first as they are so small. The nails keep popping off and away from the skin. Is this typical? I dont think I can afford the 500 dollar a month prescription any longer and am now unsure if it is in fact fungus causing the disorder.
I also have a brown toenail with veritcal lines in it (second toe of the right foot) it is the only nail that is discolored like this and doesnt even have a pink moon like the others have always had and I wonder if it is fungus or something else. This is the least thickened of all of the nails.
I will try the vinegar, but wish to know if there are any other conditions that may cause these sort of symptoms or if medication does not always work. I rarely wear shoes (I am in the house most of the time and if I go out I take them off as soon as I get home) so they stay dry.
Thanks for any information in advance :)

Hi Emm, your pharmaceuticals company is ripping you off. Write to them and tell them the identical tablets cost $125 for 42 tablets in Australia. Tell them you want to pay the same! That's around $100 U.S. Unless that was a typo and you meant $100 not $500 a month!!!!
Cheers
Jane

I was at a website a few years ago, which sold vitamins and other supplements and there was a reference to toe nail fungas. Someone (the owner maybe) said that Tea Tree Oil REALLY does work to cure fungus infection. It was a highly recommended site but don't remember the name of it. Also, I don't remember how to use it. Personally I (who have the condition now) am considering taking the oil or extract of tea tree leaves at twice the recommended dose for general health, painting my nails with it and also making enough green tea (which is a potent anti-oxident and maybe anti-fungal) to soak my feet in it for a while every day. Might make some to drink too.
About Lamisil, if that's an antibiotic you should take a probiotic capsule every day for two weeks, at least, as antibiotics kill the good bacteria in your stomach. Even 20 years after being on those kinds of medications, the amount of acidoupholus and other probiotics are sometimes not as good as they were before the treatment.
The discoloring is just part of the the condition, I'm quite sure. One of mine was like that and I'm sure it will be again if I don't do something about it.
I think we should try to avoid sugar, caffeine and system stressors while treating ourselves. Immune system booster capsules or just plain Vit C and E at the same time might help. I gotta mention Melatonin while I'm posting this because I feel so much better since I started taking it. They say to be careful with the latter if you're prone to depression but I feel depressed if I don't take it. It's in the top 20 supplements at Life Extension and is an anti-aging and immune system booster.
I think I'll check back here periodically to see if you posted and/or how you're doing. Good luck to both of us :o)

Just read your post again. My brother had this and the doctor removed a couple of toenails as part of the treatment. The rest fell off, so it looks like you have fungas and shouldn't worry that it's something else. He's better. Just clean cotton socks -changed often, good eating and removal of affected toenails. He didn't use Lamisil.
I mentioned removal of my nails to my doctor and he quickly changed the subject. It's done in the office and they probably don't get paid extra to do it.

Yeah, I was gonna say that I bought mine from a pharmacy in Canada and paid just over $100 for a month's worth of medication.
On another note, if you've already been taking Lamisil for 3 months, that's the limit. No more for you for awhile. It does take time for toenails to grow out and even after 3 months, you might not see a difference.
Try the vinegar treatment though. Lots of info in the archives about it.

I believe the vinegar is the best thing you can do, I have been using it on mine for a year now and well satisfied with what I see.
