In-growing toenail

Posted by Rib [1602.4] on September 24, 2004 at 04:52:44:

My mother-in-law is suffering with one of these. I'm sure I've read of some quite simple solution involving foot soaks and putting, is it, oil-soaked gauze under the affected area? Can any one pass on their experiences and detailed protocol for what worked for them?

Thanks a lot.
Rib

Hi Rib,

Almost all ingrown toenails are due to poorly fitting shoes,
heels which are too high or toes which are overly pointed.

Pressure on the ends of the toes is what must be avoided.
Fashion be dammmmed.

I'm a nurse at a foot Dr. We see alot of in-growns. Is your mother a diabetic? If she is she should go to the doctors right away.
Even if she isn't, there is only one way to stop the ingrown. That is to remove it. The dr. numbs it before the shot and then cuts down into the nail and removes part or all of the nail. You also need antibotic, to relieve the infection. Other problems of the feet have home remedies. But this one will aways re-occur. Good luck

Hi, Rib.

I had these once, when I was just a kid, and that was enough for me! I soon learned how to prevent them and have not had one for more than 50 years now.

Then I took care of them (& taught my patients how to prevent them), professionally, for more than 30 years.

Listen to Jack, Jayne & Ron! In the meantime, if she is not diabetic, use hot soaks (archives) to keep it from getting worse until professional help is available.

Walt

Thanks a lot everybody for your input. The inflammation has died down, luckily, and she's not diabetic. Part of her nail had been trimmed away earlier and this particular problem was caused as the nail was growing back, but she thinks it has now grown past the difficult bit and will be fine. If not, she will be straight back at the chiropodists for more drastic action. Rib
