Hi all
I think I might have toenail yeast on my big toe! I am on heavy antibiotics due to Lyme Disease and my big toenail is falling off (I had an injury 6 months ago). the doc looked at it and said it was kinda yellow and suspects overactive yeast - maybe fungus?
the other ones look fine.
what should I do? I heard about the vinegar thing, but don't know what it entails.
thank you!

The vinager treatment is as follows.....
Buy the white 4 or 5% vinager (grocery store very cheap) . Every morning and night (every 12 hours or so) drop 2or 3 drops of the vinager on the base of the toenail (cuticle area) rub it in and that's it!!! Very easy and very effective. Just remember to never skip a dose and to have alot of patience because toe nails grow sooooo slow and the new tissue because it grows deep in the nail is not even visible for 2 months so even though you may not see it right away---IT IS WORKING. Best of luck to you.

Very, very slow. Don't expect even a clear band on some big toenails for six months, believe it or not. Stronger vinegar works better - add acetic acid to bring it up to 12 per cent (get it from your pharmacist)...

I've been on the vinegar treatment for 2 12 yrs now..never missed once, but, never really got rid of it...but, eating yogurt caused it to flare up terribly. Noone else has the problem with yogurt. I have to tell you about something I bought and have used since last Tuesday. It's Tineacide. Not all drug stores carry it. Rite Aid does. It's non-prescription and I see a huge difference already...it cost 15.99 for 1.25 oz bottle of cream. I'll relate on this forum after a month's use. I'm hoping to get rid of this ugly problem, too.

Thanks, Kathy.
New to me. What can you tell us about the ingredients in the Tineacide?

Dr. Stoll, here are the ingredients on the box:
Active ingredient...Undecylenic Acid 10%
Inactive Ingredients:
Water, Urea, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Stearic Acid, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Polysorbate 60, Triethanolamine, Clotrimazole, Tea Tree Oil, Lavender Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Aloe Vera, Disodium EDTA, Methylparaben, Propylparaben.
Wow! This is some list, isn't it? Do you see anything harmful in it?? Thanks

It looks like wax, preservatives (parabens), acidic ingredient (below) and tee tree oil. A lot of people here use tee tree oil and/or vinegar/hydrogen peroxide. I bet the waxy substance helps it stay on the nail quite well. Does this have an odor?
RE: Undecyclenic Acid:
"Why Prescribed
To treat fungal infections of the skin. (Note: Undecylenic acid has generally been replaced by newer and more effective topical antifungal medications; however, your physician may find it worthwhile to prescribe undecylenic acid under certain circumstances--for example, if you have a history of allergic reaction to other antifungal preparations.)"
"Brand Name(s):
Caldesene Medicated Powder, Cruex Antifungal, Decylenes Powder, Desenex Antifungal, Gordochom Solution "

I had used 3 of the brands you mentioned over a long period of years with no results. I do remember Dr. Scholl's Foot medications years ago, like 25 yrs, they had a jar of orange colored cream, that I believe was the undecylenic acid with salicilyc )spelling?)acid combined, if my memory is correct. It worked quite well on athlete's foot, etc., but, it was discontinued a while back. I wonder why.
Thanks for your in-put.

Thanks, Kathy.
This works exactly like the much cheaper acetic acid which is the active ingredient in the distilled vinegar. It is possible that individual idiosyncracies will allow this to work in rare cases where the vinegar does not work and vice versa.

Dr. Stoll, I must be an unusual case, but, the vinegar treatment did not get me to the point that I am with this cream in just one week. I had used the vinegar, faithfully, for 2 1/2 yrs. I'm anxious to see what my nails will look like with a month's use. I'm thinking it must be the Undecylenic Acid that's working in my case.
Will post later.

Since the nail is dead tissue, I am amazed that anything could make a difference that you could see in a week.
i will be interested in hearing how you are doing in about 6 months.
