Foot Fungus and nail polish

I have foot fungus on my big toenails and pinky toenails, but luckily I discovered this site and will start using the vinegar method tomorrow! I saw in an earlier post that we shouldn't wear nail polish because it locks in moisture. The thing is that I am a Floridian, and sandals and other open-toed shoes are a staple this time of year. Since my toes are usually exposed in the spring and summer (my feet are actually very pretty, besides the toenails...lol), I keep my toes painted for fear of embarrassment. My question is are there any polishes that are safe to use and that won't inhibit the effectiveness of the vinegar?

Hi, Lady.

Hi, Lady. This is not forever. Just give us a year and then, if you want your fungus back, go ahead with the polish. Why did you get the fungus in the first place? There had to be susceptibility factors and the polish sticks out as a big one.

Walt

I have no idea. I've had it for years, which is why I started polishing my toes. My father has fungus on his toes and fingers, so maybe that has something to do with it. I also used to wear closed-toed shoes almost all the time.

About the vinegar, should it be rubbed into the cuticle or just applied and then allowed to dry?

I remember discussing this polish thing on here a few years ago...seems like Dr. Stoll said it would be ok...anyhow, I did it and my fungus still went away...

What I did was apply the polish ONLY where the fungus was present. As the clear nail grew out, I did NOT apply polish there. It wasn't the prettiest, but it looked better than if I had no polish on whatsoever. When I first started the vinegar treatment, I left about a centimeter between the polished fungus-infected nail and the cuticle. That way the vinegar could still sink in to uncovered nail, while most of my nail nastiness was covered by the polish. I also ONLY wore polish on the days where I had to have my toes seen....and I tried to find sandals that were more close-toed for everyday use.

My writing is terrible today...I'm sorry for the bad grammar and sentence structure! I had a long night last night and can't seem to form good sentences today! Hope I made sense. Good luck!

Jamie,

I had nail fungus in all 10 nails...now I have it in 9. They are SLOWLY SLOWLY SLOWLY growing out, but I've had the fungus for 8 years so I guess I can't expect a quick fix. Once my one nail got clear, I noticed it grew a lot faster than the infected ones. My big toe nails are so bad and so thin and brittle that I don't even have them any more...just putting my foot in a shoe would rip off the nail. So...I'm painting my skin for the summer! Probably not the best thing to do...but I'm not walking around nail-less for the summer.

As far as polish. I've been purposely leaving a little gap between the polish and the end of my nail near the cuticle. I'm only covering the affected area...the clear nail that's growing out is left unpolished. It seems to be working fine, I haven't seen any setbacks from it yet. Like you, my nails are lifted off the bed so I have to paint the ends of my nails as well to cover it. As the fungus is growing out, the nails are getting closer and closer to laying flat.

Just remember--2 drops of distilled vinegar MORNING AND NIGHT EVERY SINGLE DAY at the cuticle. If you miss even one dose you're in jeopardy of having to start all over again. Take my word for it.

Best of luck, nail sistah! :)

P.S. I file my nails down just to make them look more attractive in the summer, but the other months the polish and the filing go away for the year!

Thanks, Michele #2.

What a great idea! Painting only the affected part of the nails and being careful to let the gradually growing out normal nail free of polish is a ploy I have not thought of.

If you are careful not to touch any of the normal appearing nail you might get away with this trick.

Congratulations! I guess this is what is called: "Necessity is the mother of invention."

Walt
