Toenail fungus update- May

Posted by Ann W. [4028.852] on May 22, 2006 at 20:15:49:

I've been writing about once a month with my vinegar/toenail
update, since I know a lot of people stumble upon this site and
are looking for recent testimonials.
Since I last wrote, I had a reaction (dermatitis) to the tea tree
oil and listerine that I was using in addition to vinegar. So now
I'm only using vinegar. So much easier! And it's still working
great.
In fact, I started using vinegar on my "uninfected" big toe as a
preventive measure, and it turns out it was mildly infected, too.
The change is incredible. With vinegar treatment, it's growing
in with a straight, clear line between "bad" and new pink nail.
I'm amazed and pleased.
Once again, my thanks to you Walt.

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Except for that maybe because I've had this on five toes for about 26 years now. I put the vinegar on the base of the nail and skin of each toe twice daily. Any other suggestions?

My experience, and others have said it on this board too, is
that for toenail fungus that affects 100% of the nail and has
been there for many years, the improvement can be gradual.
On my mildly infected big toe, the change is incredible and
dramatic.

The other big toenail, that's really bad and has been so for
nearly 10 years, is improving but not as dramatically. There's
new pink growth, but there's also still some fungus there, and
there's not a clear line between good and bad. But each month
(and it's been about 6 now), it looks better, and the nail is not
nearly as thick as it used to be, so I'm pleased and optimistic
about a full recovery.

So, as for you, I don't know if it's too soon for you to have seen
an effect, or you're one of the unfortunately few for whom
vinegar doesn't work, or maybe it's something besides fungus.
Hopefully, though, it's just going to be a gradual process that
will be slow but successful in the long run.

Other things that many people have reported worked for them,
on this site and others: Vicks Vaporub; 50/50 mix of vinegar
and hydrogen peroxide; 50/50 mix of vinegar and listerine; tea
tree oil (for me, the tea tree oil took 2 months to cause contact
dermatitis, but when it did it was dramatic and disgusting!)

Good luck to you!

What about athlete's foot, will it work?

If I have scaly feet, that might be caused by fungus, will dipping my heels in the same type of solution help out? I do not want to use lamisil or oral tablets for this. Currently I'll use a foot scrub to get the flaky stuff off but of course it doesn't all come off.

I had athlete's foot years ago and treated it with OTC creams that you
can find in any drugstore- I used Lotrimin but there are others. It
worked fast and easily, so I can't speak from experience as to whether
these alternative products work.

I suspect, though, that if anything that's effective against toenail fungus
would also treat athlete's foot. A number of posters to this board have
said that a happy side effect of treating the toes with vinegar is that their
athlete's foot went away. It would be cheaper than the creams that are
usually $5-10.

And the ingredients in Vicks, listerine and tea tree oil have all been
shown in published scientific studies to have anti-fungal properties.
I'd start with the vinegar, maybe with a spray bottle or cotton ball, since
it seems to be the easiest on the skin.

I tried the otc creams, a couple years back. Maybe I didn't use it long enough, but I was pretty good at using it nightly under socks for a few weeks at a time, and it never went away completely. It was so frustrating. And now that the weather is getting warmer it just doesn't appeal to me to put the cream on and socks. Plus, I've read that all topical medicines will enter your bloodstream so I do try to limit any chemical, even topical ones. I have read, if you can't eat it, then don't put it on your skin, basically.
