Lamisil & Taste change

Hi..I'm new to this site. I have read several of the archive postings but still have a question. I've had bad toe nails for 18 years. 1+ yrs of tea tree oil did not help so I decided to try Lamisil (after seeing a dermo). She put me on Lamisil 5 weeks ago along with Penlac as a topical for the nails. As of this week, I have developed a horrible taste in my mouth that has greatly lessened my desire to eat. NOTHING is palatable. I assume this is from the Lamisil. Do you have any idea when my taste will go back to normal if I stop the Lamisil today? Also, could I do the vinegar treatment you recommend while using the Penlac? (FYI: I have one foot with all nails affected. The other foot and my hands are fine. I have been told that this is very common...???) Thank you for your consideration.

Hi, Lisa.

Welcome to the 'site.

Why not try the vinegar? It is totally safe, inexpensive and works as fast as anything else.

If the Lamasil has changed your taste buds (likely) what other neurological things are being affected? Some may not show up for YEARS. Who then, will suspect the lamasil that you stopped so many years before???

Walt

Thanks... I bought the vinegar today. I've been off of Lamisil for 3 days and my taste changes continue to worsen. It tastes like I have a salt block in my throat. I've lost all taste for sweet/nuetral foods. Everything is extremely salty and/or metallic. If this medicine created such a change in only 5 weeks, I'm afraid to think of what could happen after a full 12 week therapy!

Are you by chance using cinnimon toothpaste? I know it's a shot in the dark, but cinnimon toothpaste made my tastebuds stop working, and everything started tasting terrible when I ate. I was told by my dentist that good fraction of people can't handle artificial cinnimon flavoring. Just a thought.

No cinnamon toothpaste. This is a side effect of Lamisil that effects 1:140 people. I was told by the manufacturer that 90% of people regain their taste 12 weeks after discontinuing the medicine. The other 10% aren't so lucky. (It could be 4 months to a year or more) However, they did say eventually your taste does definitely return.
