Walt- 14 yr old dog with pyrometria

Posted by Vince F on September 23, 2002 at 01:12:11:

Walt, talking to the breeder of my super
last male and one of her females has an
infected uterus. A little pus and a little
blood coming out. Vet has her on antibiotics
but said that might not help and at age 14
she is affraid of having her operated on.

Kathy is a super person and my last male was
her first born who came out in her hands and
SO much male that he bounced around 4 homes
and the last one just tied him to a tree and
didn't feed him. Kathy kidnapped him when she
found out and he was too weak to stand. I
came along and she needed to find a home for
him since she had more than enough to deal
with with a 90+old sick aunt and mother and
a bunch of hounds. She was SO happy he found
someone who could deal with him that we have
become good friends and talk a few times a
week. We have a lot on common besides the
breed since she was injured a yr after me
and then was in a car accident and has
Parkinson's to boot and her dad who is left
has had a few cancers and they have a Bunch
of animals like 2 breeds of dogs plus goats.

All her 6 hounds are 14 and her dad doesn't
want her to get more so she is trying to
hang on to these as long as possible and 15
has been their limit before so she is geting
tense and the one with the problem is her
favorite.

She is the reason I have the 2 hounds I
have now that were returned to a friend of
hers who said she doesn't place a dog a 2nd
time but she said if I could handle my last
male then I could handle anything. It hasn't
been easy with all I am dealing with but
I always liked a challenge.

Hi, Vince.

What kind of person would just chain an animal to a tree and think they were being compassionate to just starve it to death!

I have no suggestions for the girl with the pyometria. However, I would bet that the good people at the "Whole Dog Journal" would know a Holistic Vet close to her that might be able to help. See the address, etc., in the holistic vet archives.

I think it is cruel and unusual punishment for her dad to try to keep her from getting a replacement dog to fill the void in her life that will surely come when her last dogs finally pass over. How old is she? Perhaps it is time for her to see this controlling behavior for what it is and get out on her own?

Walt, may have a lead from the breed list
about a vet with a treatment. I was told
that the problem is that a dogs uterus is
like a closed space.

The breeder moved back home after a divorce
because of a serious injury and then took
care of sick family members and then a car
accident and a long battle to get workmans
comp or disability has limited her options.
Her and her dad have 10 dogs between them
plus goats and he has had med problems so I
think he feels that neither should take on
more after the current ones are gone,
espically not high maintance ones like she
has.

It isn't right to abuse an animal but you
had to know him. The abuser was spliting
with his wife and had a bunch of other dogs
and had lost his job but even the fosterer
was at his wits end and told me that if I
didn't want him he was going to put him down.
I didn't believe it but couldn't take the
chance since the dog had a lot to offer and I
didn't believe he was wild but he was in a
tame sort of way. I tried to palm him off on
the worlds greatest animal lover who had an
auto salvage yard and fed all the other yards
dogs on long weekends since he had just lost
his main watch dog, the devil dog but he had
8 at the yard and 6 at home and the township
was after him to get rid of a few at home and
he had 5 kids so his wife was on him also.

he told me to Not let them put him down and
he would take him if I didn't but Really
couldn't so we made a deal that I would take
him and if I couldn't handle him then he would
and I would pay for upkeep.

I couldn't burden him with the dog though
even at the yard the dog would have lived
like a king with hot food, vitamins and a
heated trailer though this guy was the hotest
dog I could imagine and my fried had a dog
with a coat SO thick you had a hard time
geting through it to the skin.

When I got the rescue up to speed I DID
have a monster on my hands but as wild and
dog aggressive as he was he was as
affectionate with people and Loved to rub
all over you. LOL. just thinking of the
crotch inspections he gave to guys and girls
and him lifting his leg on a woman in a fur
coat who was heading for a casino. He was
something and what made me take him, as bad
shape as he was in, shaved to the skin with
big flakes of dandruff and with a salve on
him that reeked was when he came to me and
put his head on my thigh and looked in my
eyes which he did on the last day he was
concious 10 yrs later when I made him wait
till I cleaned the yard to let him come to me
and he was So eager that every time I told
him to stay he would cock his head waiting
for me to say, Come and when I did he wobbled
over and did what he did the first day as if
the crazy stuff he did for 10 yrs never even
happened...

I better call Kathy and see what the vet does
for the treatment.
