In the clinic I work in, we give the vaccine with distemper, hepatitis, leptosporosis, parvo and parinfluenza each year up to about 6 years. Then they only need it every 3 years according to a new "rule" by the manufacturer. I definately think that you should keep up on the rabies vaccine every three years after the 1st one no matter what since this is a very serious zoonosis. Rare but possible. I don't think vaccines hurt in animals since they already have such a short life expectancy. If they are old and homebound, the DHLPP is not as important as the latter. What is your reasoning on wanting to not give vaccines?

IMHO these shots do more harm than good to the animals, and have heard of alternate natural methods which prevent rabies without the shots. Just can't remember what they are this year.

I am undecided about geting my hounds shots
after reading a paper saying that they
aren't needed yearly since Humans don't need
yearly boosters and even if the titers are
low the body can generate an immune response.
Having titers checked will tell you the level
of immunity but what is good I don't know who
could say for sure.

I tend to make sure a dog has at least one
shot if an older dog and then not worry about
it. some say even one can cause problems.
With rabies I am a little more concerned but
had a booster given to one last yr and the
new vet asked if the dog ever had then and I
said many yrs ago like at least 6 and he
listed it as being good for 3 yrs when another
listed it as a 1yr shot because he didn't
know that the dog had had one 3yrs before.
Just telling him he changed the 1yr to 3.

I think Nosodes are supposed to be a
more natural vaccination. It I remember right
they are tissues from an infected animal but
may be wrong.

Here are quite a few links on the subject of vaccinations. I got them from someone's website and have not checked each link to be sure they are current. I omitted the obvious feline ones, but some of the ones listed may apply to cats, rather than dogs, or to both. The last one (naturalcanine) appears to be primarily about holistic health in general.

I have a book by veterinarian Martin Goldstein, a well-known holistic vet, called "The Nature of Animal Healing: The Definitive Holistic Medicine Guide to Caring for Your Dog and Cat". It includes a lot of information about the problems associated with routine vaccinations and case studies of animals with vaccinosis problems. There are a number of other books by holistic vets available that I'm sure cover vaccine issues. Check your local library or browse the book section at the health food store to see what looks helpful.

I have cats and they all live a holistic lifestyle now. With the young ones, we do minimal vaccinations when they are kittens, and then no more, including rabies, despite it being required by local ordinance. They do not go outside at all, so we feel the risk of vaccine-associated sarcoma and immune system overload from yearly or every-three-year vaccination is greater than the risk of them contracting rabies. My older cats all received annual combo vaccines for many years, and we are now seeing the health effects of that.

I know the issues are different with dogs, and there are many more vaccines available/recommended. If you do decide to do some vaccines, it should be possible to give nosodes or vaccines without adjuvants for individual diseases several weeks apart, to give the immune system time to recover, rather than the standard combo shots that most vets use. If your regular vet is not willing, check your phone book or the directory at www.altvetmed.com for a holistic vet in your area.
