Hi, George.
From one dog lover to another:
If you have not tried glucosamine sulphate, you should do so at once. This has been a standby for knowledgable vets for years.
Next, your dog would be especially blessed if you would give him a present of a subscription to the Whole Dog Journal. Contact them at (800) 829-9165 or at their email at wholedognjl@palmcoastd.com. To get back issues, contact them at (800) 424-7887 or their email at customer_service@belvoir.com. Ask them for the back issue that is current right now: Volume 2 #9. You might also ask them if they have any more back issues with significant articles about arthritis in older dogs.
From what I know already, having been through this myself with MY dog, I would see a Chiropractic Vet or a Vet with Chiropractic credentials. Call The American Veterinary Chiropractic Association at 623 Main Street, Hillsdale, IL 61257, (309) 658-2920. I would also Call the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association at (410) 569-0795 or contact them at their website at www.altvetmed.com for the closest Holistic Veterinarian in your area.
My dog was permanently cured of cripplng arthritis with one 2 hour electrical acupuncture treatment (It is now 10 years with no recurrence.) Call (303) 682-1167 for the nearest Certified Acupuncture Vet in your area.
You should also pay special attention to the long article in the back issue order above about a Raw Foods Diet's effectiveness for chronic conditions & how to do it.
I hope this note will get archived under Vet. so others with these kinds of questions can get these resources for themselves.
Let us know how your friend does.

I read an interesting book called "The Nature of Animal Healing" (I can't remember the author's name). I switched my dog to an "all-natural" diet (Solid Gold dog food) and he has been doing GREAT! He used to get intermittent diarrhea (very messy stuff with a 90 lb doberman in the house=). The book actually says that dogs should get REAL food but I just don't have time to cook for my dog so I buy Solid Gold. Also, the author says don't give you dog tap water! Steam distilled water is best. It's VERY interesting.

Thanks, Kari.
I couldn't agree more. My first experience with Holistic Veterinarian advice was with my lady Airdale who was crippled with arthritis for more than 6 months before a vet came to the house and did electromagnetic acupuncture on her for about 2 hours.
Within a week she was using her legs and within 1 month acted normal. It took about 6 months to get back all of her atrophied muscles but she lived 10 years more with never a sign of arthritis.
That convinced me that what I had learned (and was learning) about humans and holistic precepts worked just as well for animals.
Yesterday, I posted the references that I have found keeps me up to the minute for developments in this field and that is where I learned, several years ago, about what you are saying here.
